Get an Iomega, TDK, Sony, Aopen or Asustek!

should be able to get a 40x12x48 or 48x12x48 at around that price range.

Nowadays, most CDRWs are quite equivalent, and there's no need to get plextor unless its for a MNC internal purchase, or you're doing much CD-CD direct burning.

All brands come with burnproof technology, so there's really not much difference.

I personally would get a TDK...followed by Iomega.

Whatever you get, use the proprietary (bundled) software first.

Don't use 3rd party software unless your CDRW doesn't come with any (unlikely) or the burning software sucks!

Nero is the most recommended CDR software.

Adaptec is the most commonly used CDRW software, esp the decoder.

I hope this is not too confusing.

I'd stay away from Acer products, unless recommended by an unbias reviewer.

I did buy 1 Acer CDRW 2 years ago (8x4x32), but that's because it came with an 8mb buffer, which a reviewer mentioned would prevent coasters (from burning CDRs incorrectly), but that was not true. I really had to stop all other applications (not close, but stop them from running data) to burn a CDR. I had 384MB SDRAM, and the CDRW drive was not making use of any of that.

Anyway, I have a 1 yr old 24x10x40 Iomega CDRW which burns audio cds in 3 mins, and I have not had 1 coaster since.

But TDK's cyclone (with the blue front fascia) is reknowned for its speed and burning ability.

Always sold out for the past 2 years when I shopped for it.

This may sound like an advert (but as a hardware/software geek), I tend to do much research, and this is from 7 years of handson experience.

Aopen (like Asustek) is firstly a Motherboard manufacturer, as well as an OEM manufacturer for various parts. Their bare bones systems are not too bad, and often more reliable than cobbled-together DIY kits from Matsonic or Chaintech (or some low cost brand) and their prices reflect them.

Aopen not only produces top notch stuff, but quite often, their products surpusses other manufacturers. Reviewers often rate their motherboards (and other parts) as very stable, and higly recommended.

As an AMD fan, I only buy Taiwanese boards because they offer high reliability with value for money. But being the typical Singaporean, I am choosy, and I support only a few brands ( Abit, Asustek, Aopen and MSI). Having used them, and tested them all, I know that the price premium is far more worth it than anything else.

Case in point:

I have a 4 year old Aopen Motherboard running an AMD K6-3 450 + a 4 yr old 48X Aopen CDrom drive, and both surpassed the lifespan of the HDD and graphics card.

40x12x48 = 40x CD Write (Record) speed, 12x rewrite (RW) speed, and 48x CD Read Speed.

Therefore AxBxC = Ax CDR, Bx CDRW and Cx CD reading Speeds!

Hey Eric, when are you going to buy one?

I'm heading to Sim Lim one of these days to buy 80mm CDRWs and CDRs, I could help to buy from the "right" shops. (I go on weekdays, ....weekends I avoid SLS, too crowded..high demand, less supply ....prices higher.)

Give me a call.....

7yrs of experience. very good.

All the products you mention I deal with them before. I am just like you, but I started earlier, 1988.

I started DIY in 1995....because prior to that...no money (still studying).

I did strip my systems earlier than 1990s.....my first PC was an XT... 8086.

then the 286...which was great because it came with a 40MB HDD [laugh]

...were there shops in Sim Lim back in the 1980s?

I mean....did they sell the parts like they do now?

X-nix..... ok! that sounds like a new shop.

I used to buy from Marketplace (RFC) but that's closed down now.

So I tend to favour Videopro and Fuwell now.

I have to agree with you.

I am currently using BENQ with R/RW/W speed as follows: 48/12/40.

Although it comes with buffer underrun, I have a few burn failures. Wasted a few CD-R already. [mad]
