Genie47 1st Gear October 9, 2004 Share October 9, 2004 (edited) Ok as you all know, cerium oxide (CeO) paste is the best glass polishing agent. Available from Mr Sheeto. I report I have sped up the polishing process with alcohol. The optical clarity of the glass has improved a lot as well. OK why polish with CeO? It is actually a procedure prior to the silanizing treatment like RainX and Glaco. You have to smoothen the glass make it squeaky clean first. To some, RainX and Glaco are a niusance and would like to remove them, CeO is the proven method to do it. After that the glass surface will be purely glass. No more functional silicon groups on it to repel water. Please note that water will not bead after CeO polishing. So how to do it? My method is below: 1 tub of dry CeO powder Sponge with green wool section (the above items to be taken from Sheeto) Some rubbing alcohol from pharmacy A squirt bottle filled with alcohol Before starting, I suggest the surface of the glass be dry and cool. So make sure it is not parked in the sun prior to this. If you plan to wash the whole car, do the glass first. 1. Pour a little CeO powder into the large plastic container that came with the CeO kit you bought from Sheeto. 2. Make milk slurry with it with a little alcohol. 3. Dab the sponge to absorb a little of the slurry and start rubbing it on the glass with circular motion. 4. The alcohol being volatile will dry rather quickly. Use the squirt bottle with alcohol and spray onto the worked surface to keep it moist with alcohol as you scrub it. After a while, the surface will not bead alcohol. This shows that the surface is already polished. 5. Flush with lots of water. I suggest doing one glass surface at a time. You can substitute alcohol with water but the polishing action will be slower. Much slower. Also alcohol with its lower surface tension actually produces a much smoother polished surface compared with water. After all that, treat your glass with your favorite silanizing agent. If you prefer to leave it as it is, that is alright as well. Edited October 9, 2004 by Genie47 ↡ Advertisement
Steelblue Neutral Newbie October 9, 2004 Share October 9, 2004 careful with CeO INHALATION: Breathing dust may result in irritation of the nose & throat, prolonged exposure in excess of the TLV may result in serious inflammation of the lungs. INGESTION: Accidental ingestion of dusts may cause irritations of the digestive tract. SKIN: Contact with broken skin may be severely irritating. Genie47 1st Gear October 9, 2004 Author Share October 9, 2004 That is why it has to be worked in a slurry. Anyway, there is no polishing action without liquid. Its a pussy compared to what I deal with.

Genie47 1st Gear October 10, 2004 Author Share October 10, 2004 Just have to maintain its clarity and smoothness. It is the grease and grime the windshield that collects from your daily drives. Most car wash shampoos are just too mild. I tried this concoction and it is fabulous. 1/2 cup household ammonia (got a 1US GAL bottle from Liberty Market PS before they closed. Ace Hardware also sold these before they folded locally ) 1 pint 70% isopropyl alcohol (Guardian pharmacy can get but mine is from the lab) 1 tablespoon dish washing detergent (Mama lemon) 1 gallon water (yes 1 USGAL) This stuff is lasting me a very long time. Pisces69 6th Gear October 11, 2004 Share October 11, 2004 Hi Genie 47, Is there a shop that will do this polishing for me??? How much do they charge?? Thanks.
Genie47 1st Gear October 11, 2004 Author Share October 11, 2004 'fraid no shop. Just buy the stuff from Sheeto. His kit includes the sponge. If you need ethanol, I got some. It is just good old scrubbing with the CeO. Don't be afraid of the radioativity that it has. You get 1 million times more if you walk in the sun for 10min and maybe more if you take a flight. Pisces69 6th Gear October 12, 2004 Share October 12, 2004 Oh OK then. I was just thinking of getting someone who is experienced to do the job, maybe with a electric polisher. It will be faster & more professionally done, that's all.
Genie47 1st Gear October 12, 2004 Author Share October 12, 2004 Sheeto will show you how but he uses water. If I were to show you, I would use ethanol which I have in abundance. No, I don't use gin or vodka . Hey!....... This could be a possibility! A damn expensive possibility .
Pisces69 6th Gear October 12, 2004 Share October 12, 2004 Yeah. After we finish polishing the w/screen, we drink the balance in the tub. Polish our insides & get high at the same time. Hahaha.
Genie47 1st Gear October 12, 2004 Author Share October 12, 2004 Only with gin or vodka. I wouldn't do that with my laboratory ethanol.
Wheeler Neutral Newbie October 23, 2004 Share October 23, 2004 Hi: I got very serious wiper jutter problem which even the expensive Silicon wiper blade could not solve. Upon reading ur writeup on CeO, I am hoping that it'll be the solution to my problem. Quetion: 1.) Does polishing my windscreen withe CeO stop my wiper problem.? 2.) Abt how much is the CeO kit and who exactly is Mr Sheeto? 3.)Is there any similar product that deeply remove whatever thing that is sticking onto my windscreen that is causing severe wiper jutter? thanks
Genie47 1st Gear October 23, 2004 Author Share October 23, 2004 Sheeto is just a guy selling the CeO. CeO is a polishing agent for anything that is Si based. So glass and quartz are included. It will change the glass surface restoring the -OH groups so that the surface will become hydophillic instead of hydrophobic. When glass is wettable, it becomes more lubricated with water which helps the wiper glide.
Wheeler Neutral Newbie October 27, 2004 Share October 27, 2004 Hi: I bought a white liquid polish "Silicon.X "THE CERAMIC SILICON REMOVER" from autobac. Japnese product and instruction seems to include that it contains micro 0.001mm dia beads for removal of windscreen stains. Havn't tried yet.
