RadX Moderator September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 AS u all noe, on my way up north. One Qn, what is the logic behind overinflation of the tyres before a long trip? is it: 1. Prevent of high speed blowout 2. Better fuel economy at the expense of friction as the body of tyre would grip less any others? And Redz, hor, pay attention too liao ↡ Advertisement
Virus 2nd Gear September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 Has more air to leak, thus longer time until tire flat.
Soya Supersonic September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 less friction hence less heat buildup leading to less rubber fatigue.
RadX Moderator September 30, 2004 Author Share September 30, 2004 Very logical ans...tks... So I guess for 16", 240kPa shld suffice??
Soya Supersonic September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 depends on the car and how fast u wanna go. for mine, the manual recommends 36psi for >160kmh. for S60R, it's 39psi.
RadX Moderator September 30, 2004 Author Share September 30, 2004 Thus for cannon-bull run of above 200km/h shld be 34psi for mine la
Soya Supersonic September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 i tink 200kmh u better go for at least 36-38psi. that'll be abt right for track use later too.
Ace_t Neutral Newbie September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 would over inflation compromise safety at such higher speeds ? eg: tyre blowout or lesser road holding on wet roads
Soya Supersonic September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 most tyres can be pumped up to 50psi without unseating the beads so i reckon the safety margin is there. it's better for the car to ride a little firmer at high speeds.
RadX Moderator September 30, 2004 Author Share September 30, 2004 dun do anything foolish la....such as drifting or activating ABS shiok shiok along the way..
RadX Moderator September 30, 2004 Author Share September 30, 2004 Yeah, and I guess, 38psi shud suffice for the properror...
Raycsk Neutral Newbie September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 Tyres will not leak if the rim and tyre fitment is good. Tyres lose pressure due to temp variation, faulty valve or tiny puntures on the rubber. When driven tyres heat up and hence the air in the tyre expands. So its best to fill to recommended pressures when the tyres are cool before the long trip. Depending on the extend of the over inflation you might lose optimum contact to the road surface thus increasing the risk of losing grip should you need to make sudden movements with the car. Over flation generally reduces rolling resistance which I feel best for stop go traffic. Maybe not such a good idea for highway or fast driving. Ace_t Neutral Newbie September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 hehe.. my car not capable of drifting nor employing ABS. I just drive safely and stick to speed limits
Linus Clutched September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 stick to speed limits ?
Ace_t Neutral Newbie September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 that's more than double the standard pressure. woun't the tyre burst or at least unseat from the rims...
RadX Moderator September 30, 2004 Author Share September 30, 2004 think his 'speed limits' is relative.... relative to Autobahn, he is within limits
Ace_t Neutral Newbie September 30, 2004 Share September 30, 2004 yes.. stick to the speed limit of the one in front
RadX Moderator September 30, 2004 Author Share September 30, 2004 Tyres are able to withstand more than that.... ↡ Advertisement
