Burned smell from brand new Hyundai Matrix

Hi all. As above, I follow my brother-in-law to collect his new Matrix yesterday night. The engine was on as the SE was giving orientation to him. I noticed that the smell from the engine heat was rather terrible, it smelled like something being burned. He too did notice it too. Then when he drove back to his car park and leave it there for an hour before returning to it, he noticed that the floor at the front of the car was very wet, seem to be from the cooler or so. Like to find out from you guys out there if you happens to encounter these problems too? Whether the problems mentioned are normal and is ok? Or rather these are problems faced with brand new cars for the first time or only Hyundai models? Hope to find out what's happening. Thanks in advance! [shocked]

The engine heat is usually quite high for the Matrix but burning smell is a little unusual. Water condensation from the air con is quite normal but not sure whether it is just a small patch or a really big one. To ease his worries, bring it back to KMC for them to look it over or lock into CH forum. Many Matrix bros there can offer good feedback:- http://clubhyundai.org/

if the smell is real bad, why din you refer back to the SE there and then? [confused]

 

I felt it could be the new alternator, belts, etc being heated up and giving a faint burnt smell... if the liquid is verified to be water, its more likely to be the air-con, especially leaving it on stationary... then again... i maybe wrong...

Hi, somehow the SE was gone before we can get hold of him. The water part was when he returned back to his place. Anyway, thanks to all you guys for the help! Will ask him to go back kmc for a check!

slight burning smell is quite normal in new cars as some of the factory coatings in the exhaust and engine block are burning off.

I think it is quite a common smell.. Mine is a Chevy Optra, not Hyundai.

 

When I got my new car, I can smell something... but rather, it comes from the exhaust...

I thought it is the new tires or something.. went round the car sniffing like a dog..

 

And the smell is stronger during initial runs at high-speeds on expressways.

 

Now, afte 1.5 months, don't smell it anymore.

maybe this is what most MCF's forumers term as "burning in". (Or was it 'running in'?) [sly]

 

Don't worry too much. It's under complete warranty at least for the 1st year right? Just monitor it's vital statistics ie temp indicator, or any other warning LEDs.

Might be the brakes bedding in which cause the smell. Should go off in a week or two.

yes, the warranty will make sure you get a new car when it got burned within 1 year. However, the warranty does not cover the owner if he/she got burned in the car within 1 year of the car lifespan.
