are there simple headunits out there that will take an mp3 player input? i don't want to use those fm transmitter type things, i could even live with a wire running out of the headunit.

i know one alternative is to find a CASSETTE type headunit and use that adapter, but is there a single disc one that could take a line input or something? thanks!

you can use any MP3 player and a Belkin FM modulator to wirelessly transmit your sound to an unused radio statioin e.g. 88.4 etc. (bought for $54 from South Asia Computer in Funan)

I am doing that now with my portable Shinco DVD player. I can play DVDs and receive sound from the car speakers with the FM modulator. Of course the sound is not that great if you are an audiophile, but it's cheap, good and effective! [thumbsup]

thanks vivioman, i have one of these belkin transmitters but find the quality unacceptable, plus sometimes you get interference.

i'm really looking at something to hook up one of these HDD based mp3 players, cos i don't want to have to have to 'sync' my mp3s here and there, burn extra CDs/DVDs etc.

why don't they just make a headunit with a line in jack on the front panel??!!

i confess i am quite a mp3 idiot.

can anyone teach me how to download songs for mp3, store them in mp3 players or mp3 disks or into those creative mp3 products like nomad and jukebox?

many ways of doing this.

some mp3 players come with inbuild encoder. you simply need to hook up the mp3 player to your PC/laptop, pop in your normal music CD into the computer's CDrom drive, drag those songs you want into the mp3 player icon and you are done. while the files are being transferred, the songs are tranformed into mp3 format by the mp3 player.

or, you can download CD "ripper" software from the internet, install in your PC. put your CD in the CDrom drive, then use the ripper to convert those songs into mp3. thereafter, you need to transfer these mp3 files to your mp3 player.

if not simply search for the mp3 song you want in the internet, download and save to your PC, then transfer to mp3 player.

the above methods are for HDD type mp3 player or those with flash memory storage type (those you can double up as portable storage device, usually has a usb connector on 1 end of player).

if you have one of those mp3 player that takes CD, you can burn mp3 into CDs, then play those CDs. most HU capable of playing mp3 files belong to this catergory. there are also portable ones like normal CD walkman available from major brands.

besides mp3, there are many other formats. just search the internet thumbsup.gif

when the ripper converts these songs, are they convert into soft files in the pc? that also means the pc must be able to transfer these mp3 files to the player....again just plug the pc to mp3 player?

is it same as my question above? ie plug pc to mp3 player?

so am i right to say that those small sized mp3 players are tnose that has flash memory type? they are the ones that have usb connector?

HU = home unit? are mp3 discs same sized as CDs and DVDs?

mp3 is a file format, just like .doc (word document), .xls (excel file), .txt (text file), etc. all are soft copy.

[/color]

normal CD music is filename.cda. when you convert it into mp3, it will be filename.mp3.

you need to link your mp3 player to pc, then copy the mp3 files from pc to player. normally, mp3 player will come with usb cable, just use it to link up the 2 equipment. better mp3 players even come with firewire!!! firewire transfers data faster than usb cables.

if you using those small mp3 players with usb connector on one end, just plug it into the usb port in your pc.

yes, as above.

if the mp3 player says "256mb/ 516mb/ 1GB/ etc", they are the flash memory type. HDD unit usually slightly bigger in physical size (cos there is a HDD inside) and higher capacity (10/20/40GB) as well.

HU = head unit in your car. actually, home unit also the same lah. normal dvd, CDrom and CDs are of the same size. so if your vehicle head unit or hi-fi set at home or CD player says it can play mp3, just pop in a CD containing mp3 files and that's it! wink.gif

Some of the Blaupunkt HUs comes with a single stereo line in jack.

my old blaupunkt (Miami) had this stereo 'line in' cord attached

to it (about 30cm long). all i had to do was buy a male/male

cord and insert one end to the HU' line in and the other end to

the MP3 player's headphone jack. I am not sure about the newer

Blaupunk models.

i have just checked my manual and it's called the 'auxillary

line in'. I also too a look at the blaupunk's website and

the newer models (low price range) also has it.
