what is the right way to start up your car?

1) crank the key all the way

2) turn the key into the first position, wait for a few sec then crank all the way

No. 2. Let the computer check all the necessary before crank the engine.

Also heard that turn key to first position will pump fuel to start flowing which help to start. Anyone like to confirm ?

I think "2" should be the appropriate way...thats what the toyota manual recommended so as to allow the diagnostics to detect any faults , esp the ABS.

for my car... 1st turn will allow radio and some accessories to powerup

2nd turn will allow the coil and fuel pump to activate as well as other diagnostics on the engine electrical system to get ready...

usually you can hear a click when the fuel pump has finished equalising the pressure to the injector.

Firstly I off the air-con first before turning the key to first position & wait for a few seconds before turning the key to start. Was told that should not start the car with the Air con switch on. Can anyone confirm this also ... Thanks [gossip]

if Manual, clutch in and crank. [;)]

best to switch off all electrical items (including radio and if in the dark, headlamps) during car startup. Starting the car with electrical items on will cause some stress to the battery.

I think 2) will be the better option.

wah i have been doin step 1 since i got my car more than 2 weeks ago, just started doing step 2 a few days ago!! [furious]

i notice when i first turn the key to the first position, i can hear some noise, no idea what is that.

my car is a manual, how come it's advisable to clutch in and start the car since i left it to neutral when i left the car? isn't it the same thing?

I was told that when you clutch in, it opens some circuit, relieving more electrical stress when you crank the engine, helping to lengthen the battery life. So I have the gear at neutral, depress the clutch and then crank the engine. I also make sure all lights, aircon, fan, radio, etc are off first.

okay i didn't know that. always thought neutral is as good as the clutch being depressed.

I've been doing step 1 all the way. My OBC doesn't require step 2 coz diagnostic will continue to run until they've fully detected no malfunctions. If there were any, it'll indicate the "checking engine" symbol.

i think by using (2) is not so much on the issue of engine check because the computer is always monitoring the electronics and not only when starting the car. Using step two is sort of let the electronics become stable or let the voltage become more stable... [:)]
