Overcomer Neutral Newbie October 25, 2005 Share October 25, 2005 I had a 1999 model, Jap made, almost same as the Mazda 323. The autobox broke down after 4yrs+ and I had to scrap the car. Overall, quite good pickup, roadholding, FC 11-12km/l. Present model is made in Philippines, price is quite low but I dunno abt reliability. ↡ Advertisement
Carwatch Neutral Newbie October 28, 2005 Share October 28, 2005 (edited) hi Ekardo, You are not alone. I am also considering Laser....afterall, at the present price, only few car comes close. The package looks good.... Jap Tech, Conti/US brand, Handsome looks, Decent engine (DOHC), good space, Auto, reasonable FC etc. However my concerns are build in Phlp (build quality), the quite famous Auto gear box problem and the outdated design inside. Think Sunny, Optra, Proton, Lancer, Liana are about this price too... (+/-) but most come with Manual box. Fluffy Clutched October 28, 2005 Share October 28, 2005 is the autobox problem famous? didn't know it existed! before my tody, the previous car was a Laser (the curvy one with the discreet rear spoiler), the car felt pretty responsive and agile, looked good too! didn't have any problems with the autobox for 6+ years. In fact, was problem free until the 6th year when the fuel pump went RIP.

Linus Clutched October 29, 2005 Share October 29, 2005 look at it this way. laser still is a 323. jap car light weight lah. but if it is based on protege design then is abt 1.2 tons. earlier versions of 323 (non protege) weighs abt 1 ton nia. diff lies in the metal bars they inserted in the doors, front and back of the protege models. Carwatch Neutral Newbie October 30, 2005 Share October 30, 2005 Read from a number of posts regarding auto gear box problem (usually after 4/5 years of driving). Thanks for sharing, guess chances of get the problem is not that high afterall. Now, it makes it a brighter deal to consider the laser. is the autobox problem famous? didn't know it existed! before my tody, the previous car was a Laser (the curvy one with the discreet rear spoiler), the car felt pretty responsive and agile, looked good too! didn't have any problems with the autobox for 6+ years. Fastcar Neutral Newbie November 4, 2005 Share November 4, 2005 How's the build quality of this Philippines-made Laser? Can't be that bad since they are exporting the car to other countries, right?

Carwatch Neutral Newbie November 5, 2005 Share November 5, 2005 Hi there, Not sure about the build quality. Maybe the laser owners around can share with us. I am also curious to learn more about the drive dynamics of laser..... is it comfort, quiet or sporty etc. Hope some laser drivers can enlighten us. Also PM you. Coolpica 4th Gear November 5, 2005 Share November 5, 2005 That's a short report on Ford Laser in today (05/11) Life's motoring. Claimed fuel consumption is 10km/L. Interior design is said to be a bit dated.
Fastcar Neutral Newbie November 5, 2005 Share November 5, 2005 Interested in the Laser as I like the looks and most importantly, the price! Specs also not bad like factory fitted fog Lights * front projector headlights * parking sensor* 4-wheel disc brake with ABS * rear sun-blind* factory fitted alloy wheels * 16 valve DOHC 1.6 litre engine* Independent Rear supension. If you add the RS Lynx bodykit, it can look very sporty and aggressive! Engine is supposed to be quite responsive and auto gearbox eager to downshift thus affecting fuel economy. Suspension said to be on the firm side instead of comfort. Only complaint is the dated interior carried over from the 323 and the made in Philippines tag. Should be quite a good deal since it is more or less a Japanese Mazda assembled elsewhere.
Ekardo Clutched November 6, 2005 Share November 6, 2005 seems like this Laser is a good buy if one can tolerate the outdated interior look....but seriously, i didn't bother much about the interior look, becos to me, the interior actually looks better than Lancer, all the KIAs and even Honda..only Sunny's interior looks better..I think... so the problem of the auto gearbox is not common...maybe I should go test drive soon.. any new owner lately? I heard from the salesman that 100over were snapped up during the 11k COE period..
Genie47 1st Gear November 7, 2005 Share November 7, 2005 Not actually Holden but made by GM Holden. The design is still Opel Family series. ↡ Advertisement
