Potheader Clutched August 1, 2004 Share August 1, 2004 Cool! But the centre front seat looks a little small. Wonder can it fit an adult? And is it collaspable in the case only got 5 passengers? But anyway, cheers to Honda for thinking of such a novel idea.. (maybe i sua ku!)

Tarmac 3rd Gear August 2, 2004 Share August 2, 2004 Honda launches its new 6-seat MAV simultaneously in home market and in Europe. It is named Edix in Japan and F-RV in Europe, the latter stands for "Flexible - Recreational Vehicles". The most special feature of Edix is its 6-seat layout consisting of 2 rows of 3 seats. With little doubt, it copies the idea from Fiat Multipla. Like the Fiat, all seats are independent and can slide back and forth to tailor the most comfortable sitting position for individuals. But unlike the Fiat, center seats are narrower than others as they are designed for children, thus the outer seats are benefited from extra width. This means when the car sits up to 4 persons, they will enjoy better comfort. The center front seat is positioned a few inches behind the driver seat to avoid rubbing shoulders, something like Smart Fortwo. Because of the need to accommodate 3 seats east to west, the body of Edix is very wide (1810mm), about 110mm wider than a Civic. It is also much taller (at 1610mm) to enable a higher sitting position and more headroom. In contrast, the length (4285mm) and wheelbase (2680mm) are exactly the same as a Civic 5-door hatchback. The chassis rides on the same suspensions as Civic as well - the front consists of MacPherson strut plus a toe-control link, the rear is a double-wishbones-based multi-link setup. One can easily see its relationship with the Civic platform, although C-RV is its closest cousin. Power comes from 2 existing petrol engines - 1.7 VTEC with 130ps (125hp DIN) and 2.0 i-VTEC with 156ps (150hp DIN). For European market, it is also offered with Accord's 2.2-litre common-rail turbo diesel with 140hp. Japanese cars employ 4-speed automatic transmission. European cars use 5 and 6-speed manual gearbox instead. Edix seems to handle quite good by MAV standard, thanks to its wide tracks and a high roll axis set into suspension geometry. The latter makes body roll less noticeable to the driver. Besides, it uses conventional hydraulic steering rather than the fuel and money saving electric assistance used in Civic, ensuring better communication with the road.
