Lightspeed Clutched October 4, 2002 Share October 4, 2002 Been hearing lots of creaking sounds from my car recently. Went to Yap Bros. and they diagnosed it to be my engine mounting cracking Not very sure about this. He quoted me around 350 to get it changed. Can anyone advise? How much will it cost and where's a good place to get this done? Issit really the engine mounts? ↡ Advertisement
Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie October 4, 2002 Share October 4, 2002 "hearing lots of creaking sounds" Hi! there, Lightspeed, Did the w/shop show you that the mountings are cracked? It should be easy to see if it's cracked or not. How many mountings are cracked? Rgds Paul Yong
Lightspeed Clutched October 4, 2002 Author Share October 4, 2002 Hi Paul, They did ask me to take a look and pointed to me, but I didn't have the faintest clue!

Turbobrick Neutral Newbie October 5, 2002 Share October 5, 2002 How many mounts they claim is spoilt? I changed one of my brick's mount before and the mounting is $80 plus $80 labor, unless it's all the mountings $350 is too high.
Lightspeed Clutched October 5, 2002 Author Share October 5, 2002 Came too late! missed you at the meetup anyway I brought it down to my trusty old workshop and the mechie said its not the engine mounting .... as I needed the car to go meetup (very dedicated to MCF! ) told him I'll let him screw around with my car on Monday instead Thanks for your help Paul

Wildswan Neutral Newbie October 6, 2002 Share October 6, 2002 lightspeed, the engine mount of my previous car was soaked with engine oil. there wasnt any creaking sound. engine mounts do not just fail. even if there are cracks in them, they will still function to some extend. most time the creaking sound will come from panels/trims that are not tightly mounted or have become loose due to ageing. wildswan
Lightspeed Clutched October 6, 2002 Author Share October 6, 2002 the sounds were definately coming from the chassis as confirmed by my mechanic. will send in my car for diagnosis tomorrow
Yongwd 1st Gear October 6, 2002 Share October 6, 2002 maybe I am inexperience, but so far i never heard engine mount will creak unless your car has suffered frontal collision before and lower cross member alignment wasnt properly, forcing the engine to sit on misalign engine mountings. when engine mounting "crack"? worn, u will feel vibration inside your cabin when car is idling. Do a simple test. Pull handbrake to max Half clutch, 1st gear, try to accelerate off, any creaking sound? I think the sound are from the suspension parts instead. I maybe wrong
Sparetyre Neutral Newbie October 7, 2002 Share October 7, 2002 I agree with Shag's "inexperience" opinion. Don't think the "creaking" sound is due to cracked engine mountings. Faulty engine mountings should cause vibration, especially noticable during idle.
Luckcent 4th Gear October 7, 2002 Share October 7, 2002 On my previous Laser, when the engine mounting breaks, the whole engine, will try to rotate ( for RWD ) and caused a lot of movements. Open the hood while stationery and try to rev the engine and you will notice the difference.
Lightspeed Clutched October 7, 2002 Author Share October 7, 2002 Nope...As confirmed with my mechie... its def. not the engine mounts as told to me by the folks at Yap Bros. I myself was confused cos I know that the steering wheel + other parts would be vibrating should it be the engine mounts. My mechie told me its some other thing. Would need to surrender my wife to him for diagnosis later .. Will let u guys know whats the actual problem should my mechie be able to find the problem area. Thanks for the concern everyone
Slowpoke 3rd Gear October 7, 2002 Share October 7, 2002 I broke 2 of my engine mountings before, the bloody engine vibrates badly at idle and during a hard launch, the engine sort of jumped and made a dent from the underside of my bonnet (looks like a pimple on the bonnet). Now using mountings with slightly harder rubber compound.
Lightspeed Clutched October 7, 2002 Author Share October 7, 2002 yes...exactly... should feel vibration... but I'm not getting any...just creaking sounds... thats why gotta send for checkup... how did your mounts break?

Ricky_doodle 4th Gear October 7, 2002 Share October 7, 2002 (edited) well,i had the same experience as you did man..... usually during idle,my steering wheel vibrates and i'll get to hear the whole dashboard along with the rest of the car vibrating as well....thought that it could hold out till the car's COE expires in slightly less than 2 yrs' time....but i was wrong.... decided to have the mounting changed as i couldn't take the vibrations anymore and i've been hearing some funny sounds upon moving off from rest.... then found that one of the five mountings broke already when the mech dismantled the mountings.....whcih explained the weird sounds durings move-off.... now engine sounds more silent than the aircon.... well, that to me,is money well-spent cheers bro Edited October 7, 2002 by Ricky_doodle
