What makes this sound?

Presea

Hi all,

I realised that I have not asked this question here.

I drive a 92 Presea (M).

In my car, there is a "csshh" sound that comes from the engine bay when ever I change gears above 3000rpm (which is 95% of the time).

It sounds like air being released through a valve.

It is quite loud, and can be heard with the windows up.

With windows down, I've heard it when in a building, and it would sound rather loud to a pedestrian next to the car.

I do drive the car hard, and at every gear change up from 1st to 5th, it is always there.

I've asked my mechanic a few times, he's even driven it to hear the sound, and he says that he doesn't know what it is.

My engine is definitely stock (my mechanic vouches that), and I've never ever heard the same sound from another car.

It is not like a blow of valve or waste gate, that I know.

I have driven my car for a year, and never really cared, as I've grown accustomed to it.

Please help [:p]

Thanks

Hmmmm...Do you think it could be the secondary fan???

In the E46, there were instances of a few of my pallies who had this loud kinda 'hummmmmmmm' sound, esp b4 warm-up. It was found to be the fan.

Well, have to hear it to get closer to identify what it is..

Just my .02! [thumbsup]

Damn....my car really sprung a leak! [thumbsdown][thumbsdown][thumbsdown]

I was driving some of my relatives home (9pm), and along the PIE, my car started to overheat.

There was a leakage NOT at the radiator, but on a rubber hose above and behind the engine block. It's one of those thick black hoses.

The entire radiator became empty, and obviously the car overheated.

I have a question....the radiator is not leaking.

And when I turn off the air con, the leakage stops! [shocked]

Does the air con take in water from the radiator? Is it linked somehow?

Had to leave my car at the workshop an hour ago.

Tomorrow will go down to see what's wrong. [:p]

the thick black hoses could well be the hoses that eventually connect the radiator to your engine, they channel the water to/from the engine from/to the radiator.... so if any on these hoses leaks, it empties the water in the radiator mah [:/]

hope the workshop can fix it for you properly.... i think when the a/c is running, it requires more cooling at the radiator, and therefore higher water pressure in these hoses, when there's a gap/torn in the hoses, there will be a leak due to water pressure, or something like that.....

I guess so, after all, the smell was like "radiator water".

But its wierd, as the leakage stops altogether when the aircon is off.

I expected some leakage if the hose was connected to the radiator.

Maybe the water was all gone by the time I switched it off. [dizzy]

Hope my engine is still okay after running at high temp for around a minute. [:p]

Thought you were playing LFS?

I will be watching the show "24" tonight, so no gaming for me. [thumbsdown]

I think the sound from my intial posting is linked to this leakage problem.

Must be a small cut in the hose that created the initial sound, and tonight, the hole became bigger [:(]

Neutral Newbie

My car had similar problem.. I hear hissing sound after my engine is turned off..

I opened the hood and found water stains near one of the radiator pipes... After I tighten up the brace, it is ok again..

Hi Zrun.

That's why I'm rather perplexed. [dizzy]

I heard the hissing sound, and I opened the hood....radiator was fine, not leaking there.

Then I realised the source was behind the engine. [:|]

Took a torch (underground carpark), shone it there, and saw a mist coming downwards, with steam created as it fell on the engine block itself.

I didn't think it was necessarily related to the radiator then. (No coolant coloured water)

The reservoir was still full, so I didn't think it could have been that.

I was driving home and the hissing started midway during my journey.

For 2-3 mins, the airconditioner was quite warm, no cold air. [:/]

I took it that is was related to the above problem, .....carried on driving

Then the temp started to rise..... as I pulled out onto the expressway (PIE)

And suddenly, as I was thinking about pulling over, the airconditioner kicked in, cold air came flowing out. [:)]

After about 5 mins of everything being fine, the temp started to rise again... airconditioner was not working again (only fan)

Switched off the airconditioner (button) and the hissing stopped when the aircon was switched off.

But the temp started to get too close to MAX, so I pulled over, [:p]

Switched off the engine, and the temp started to keep going UP. [sweatdrop]

So I popped the hood, which by the way wasn't that warm....

started to touch various objects to see if they were hot (Engine was hot obviously)

and then I found the radiator empty. [:(]

So as I asked before....how's the aircon related to the radiator.

I've seen many radiator leaks throughout my life, and never has one leaked so far up the engine bay.

I'm not a mechanic, only a wannabe-racer.

I was not in the mood for playing LFS last night [mad]

My baby's at the workshop [bigcry]

Anyway, 24 is a action/thriller series starring the affable Kiefer Sutherland.

About CIA - Presedential Primary - Assasination - Terrorism Fiasco. [dizzy]

The coolest parts about the show is that it is actually like real-time, with 24 hours spread out over 24 (hour long) episodes, with many subplots running against each other concurrently, and the filming direction is so good that you can concentrate on all the various happenings on the several main characters, even though its complicated. [thumbsup]

The reason why I can't stop watching..... I've watched almost all (20) out of the previous 22 episodes, and last night was the 23rd episode. Next week, unless I'm lying dead somewhere, I'll definitely catch the last episode. [nod]

It's like doing those 5000piece jigsaws. When you get to the end, there's no way you won't finish it. If you're just started, it's easy to put aside and forget, but once all the pieces are laid in place....there's a sense of accomplishment or something like that. [laugh]

cheers.

TT has turbo....so it must be the blow off valve.

I'm sure a 4A-GEU from a Toyota Levin (an Intial D car) will fit in your engine bay [:)]

then you can hiss everywhere! [laugh]

yup, if the present engine konks out one day, i will definitely put a 4AGE series engine in it, then you will hear hsst hsst next to your ears in your Presea.... maybe by then your Presea already got a monster in the engine bay??? [laugh][laugh]

cheers
