Fluctuating fuel guage

Hi Everyone!

I've been following most of the threads here tho i've never posted as yet. Am driving a Silver Optra. Reg - Nov 03. Great car to drive so far....till now....

would like to check with all the Optra drivers out there. I've experienced an intermittent problem of fluctuating fuel gauge since getting the car, once in Feb, May & in the last 2 days.

Called up SA this morning & found out from their guy that apparently this was a problem reported by a few other Optras. In Feb when I brought this to their attention, they had no idea what was happening. Now they tell me its happening to other drivers too. They're now waiting for response from Chevy HQ.

BTW, they changed my fuel pump 2 weeks ago after I reported my 2nd fluctuation. However this did not solve the problem.

Anyone else facing the same issue?

Yup had a talk with one them and they also said it was a problem. Told my dad hope the gauge broke at the 3/4 mark so no problem can go to JB for refueling. [laugh][laugh]

I too notice that but didn't alarm. I notice that the rate of the fuel guage decreasing is not constant. Thanks for hightlightingm, i will make sure next time i check in my car will get SA to resolve this.

Notice that this is more obvious on a sunny day when u drive around.

Thanks

I've got the same problem too!

Even when I pump to the brim, the reading will only show almost at the F marker. Then it'll decrease very rapidly, and be just above E for the rest of the tank. This problem started about 2 weeks back.

Sent my car in last Thursday after I returned, but the problem persisted...in fact it got worse.

Been told by SA that there's no permanent solution for this yet. So I'm not going to send my car in until they can promise me a proper fix. Fortunately I'm quite familiar with my FC, so can wait till they have a permanent solution...just depend on mileage for the time being.

In the mean time, I've asked SA to give me a letter to show in case I get questioned for repeatedly using the same excuse ("my fuel gauge spoiled")at the border.

i am not driving an Optra but had similar problem, the fuel gauge still having problem even after fuel pump changed. Finally solve the problem after changing petrol company, which petrol brand are you using? mine was with Caltex and changed to Shell for few months, since then problem solved, Not sure this would help [;)]

Actually, the first 2 times the fuel guage acted up, I was in the middle of changing petrol type. 1st time - From Caltex to Mobil (both 98Oct). 2nd time - Mobil 98 to 95.

However since SA changed my fuel pump, the guage been's crazy non stop. Have to really rely on the mileage.

I dont think types of petrol should affect the fuel guauge that way.

Bro, can you explain clearly what you mean by fluctuating fuel gauge? You mean it goes to E and then goes back to F or what??

Matt,

What is the FC like for your Optra? For me, it's now 470km with the needle just a tad below 1/4. It started from super full tank.

From my estimation, to E with lights should be around 580km....making it to be around 10km/L

(edited)

As I'm now "driving Blind" (fuel gauge kaput), I'll top up around 450km.

Used to average about 500km (when gauge was working).

615km was the best I've ever got.

I've never driven until the warning comes on.

My fuel light comes up around 430-450km... It's kinda comes on slowly and fading off...then another 0.2-0.5km repeat the same process...no audio sound heard like my previous Skoda...max I "loon" endured till 500km before i seriously look around for discounted petrol kiosk.... [:)][:p]

I usually don't top up to the brink until it super full. I read the manual that the indicator light up once your fuel tank has 7.5L of petrol left, but i usually top about 48L and the tuck sound heard. for that i usually hit 440km with high rev and accel. Begin to like the character of this car. it damn good bro.
