Due to increase in gas price in the USA (2.15 USD per gallon) I also altered my driving habits.. However be careful not to overload engine at low rpm, which will cause more damage to the piston seals than high rpm driving.

I.e. if you want to accelerate, always start easing on the accelerator at above 2000rpm.

USD $2.15 per gallon = SGD $0.94 per litre

Would it be fair to say a similar 1.6 Toyota would cost 10K more than, say a Hyundai?

You can say that .. but difficult to compare car value to fuel spendings. If you are thinking that buying a cheaper Matrix more than make up for the lost in fuel cost ... think again ... fuel price will keep changing ... so some day you losses will be more ... what you need to do is get a cheap car that is fuel efficient [laugh]

i think it is important to also look at the person's travelling patterns.

if travel very little, can pocket the savings in car price by buying hyundai.

but for those that travels a lot, poor consumption cars are gonna hurt more than expected

Very good assumption ... but try others like cheaper cars that has better FC ... Hyundai seems to be the worst of the lot [shakehead]

Fuel consumption is one factor........... car reliability is also important. You don't want things breaking down on you straight after the warranty period is over. Dunno about the rest, but I've been noticing alot of matrix cars breaking down and being towed lately.

yeah.....i think i only used hyundai as an eg....not meaning to say Kia, Proton, Chevrolet shouldn't be considered in its place.

of course, that's another factor to consider.

basically a lot of things to consider.....important thing is to come up with a decision matrix so that decision made considers all factors and priorities.

Zrun,

pls elaborate a bit on that overload low rpm = more damage to the piston seals thingy, thnx!

It seems like the Korean cars all guzzle fuel regardless of engine size! The local Atoz here in M'sia used to do only something like 200+km with a full tank of fuel, that's at least RM30+ to RM40, and that's with light throttle and a 1.0 engine!

You may want to take a look at the WAJA for below $65K since it can be easily modified and repaired up north as the years go by.

Not true lah !!! I am driving a 2.0L auto Korean car and my FC is about 10-10.5 km/l (light footed) .... maybe the Korean don't know how to do small cars [laugh][laugh][laugh] go to Korea and you will notice there is hardly any car below 1600cc on the road .. most of them 2000cc even the taxis

on top of the fact that it's back to square one after u factor in the price difference, it's onli relevant if u keep a car for 10 yrs and dun give a hoot abt how a car drives. in the end, 'suffer' for nothing....tongue.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif

that why some pple are quite lousy in making decision.

say buy car for fuel efficiency but don't drive that often. best is sell the car within 2 yrs......then what for pay for the premium!

Hi there, would you care to elablorate what you just mentioned? Me dun understand. What do mean easing on the accelerator. are you implying that when moving from stop, must step on the accelerator until above 2000rpm?
