Kytl68 Neutral Newbie May 10, 2004 Share May 10, 2004 Does any know how I can get rid of that "tappet" sound ... that iritating tit-tit-tat-tat sound that is coming from the engine ? ↡ Advertisement
Saaber Neutral Newbie May 10, 2004 Share May 10, 2004 You will need to readjust the tappet clearance....
Gendut 2nd Gear May 11, 2004 Share May 11, 2004 Do you hear it while driving or when checking engine with bonnet open? Also what is your mileage? Trying to figure if it is tappet you're hearing cos your description is vague.
Kytl68 Neutral Newbie May 11, 2004 Author Share May 11, 2004 Don't know if the sound is there when driving ... guess it is not that loud yet ... it a 2 years plus car. When I am standing outside the car at idle, I can hear it ... more intermittent than continuous. When the air cond is on, can hardly hear unless I open the hood since the fans are blowing ...... And when I switch off the air cond, it become very obvious ... it's a kind of tit-a-tat sound. Think I should just bring it to a mechanic outside warranty agent since they say it is not a problem at all (very normal). Never know engine suppose to have a ticking sound after all this years .... then use the reciept to claim from them ... do you think that will do ? Kytl68 Neutral Newbie May 11, 2004 Author Share May 11, 2004 Send it to the warranty agent and they say it is normal ... which is puzzling
Saaber Neutral Newbie May 11, 2004 Share May 11, 2004 usually, at cold start, the tappet sound will be obvious but after warming up, the sound should soften or go away....

Kytl68 Neutral Newbie May 11, 2004 Author Share May 11, 2004 Understand that if you have a older car .. but a 2 years plus car .. it's strange isn't it ?
Kytl68 Neutral Newbie May 11, 2004 Author Share May 11, 2004 It's a petrol driven car.
Gendut 2nd Gear May 11, 2004 Share May 11, 2004 Go open up the bonnet and take a look again. This time try to trace exactly where the sound is coming from. It could be the tappet, or something else that is loose. If it irritates you so much just pop into a shop and ask for their help.
Kytl68 Neutral Newbie May 12, 2004 Author Share May 12, 2004 The sound is coming from the engine block itself ... i think ... ... I will go pester C&C again the next servicing soon. It's not so irritating but more worrying ... never like funny sound from engine or components as it means more damage to come ... then big pain in the wallet Thanks for your advice ... and today I open the bonnet and found out that the stock air intake near the manifold has a hissing sound ... don't know if it is normal ... C&C has another job to do now ... keep them employed
Soya Supersonic May 12, 2004 Share May 12, 2004 unlikely to be tappets as cars nowadays (esp a 2yr old one) hv self-adjusting ones. could be the other bearings that's making the sound.
Kytl68 Neutral Newbie May 12, 2004 Author Share May 12, 2004 If only the service "engineer" are more willing to find the source of the problem to keep me from guessing .... need to convince them to solve the problem
Yeobh 4th Gear May 12, 2004 Share May 12, 2004 Open the bonnet , get hold of a long screw driver of metal pipe , place one end on the rocker cover and the end to your ear. You should be able to hear claerly the tappet noise. Get someone to accelerate the engine - if the tapping noise get louder as the engine speed increase, chances you have wide tappet clearance. Get them adjsuted, do not DIY unless you know how to get No.1 clyinder on power and cylinder 4 on the rock. ↡ Advertisement
