Anyone knows about OBD-II and Japanese cars, especially Mitsubishi (Galant VR-G) and Honda?

I know a bit about OBD-II and find it very cool, on conti cars especially VAG (Volks,Audi,SEAT,Skoda), where you can monitor engine, hack accessories' functionalities, etc ..

OBD-II is just a standard for emissions and engine management. Certain makes like VAG or Volvo have factory codes or locks which require additional modules to plug into the OBD-II reader to decipher the unique factory codes.

Yes, officially OBD-II is just a standard (from the States) on emissions control. However, manufacturers usually will expose their cars' electronics over the same interface.

For example, the feature to auto lock/unlock of doors (Doors lock at 15 mph and unlock when key is removed) in VAG (Audi, Volks, Skoda, SEAT) cars. See http://www.audiworld.com/tech/elec13.shtml

My question is, are Japanese (in particular Mitsubishi) cars similar with their electronics / OBD-II?

I understand that the VAG cars can use their OBDII tool to adjust the electronic features. Never had experience with other Euro makes yet.

The Jap cars have limited OBD-II resources as they are not talked about much. Most probably plug straight into an aftermarket ECU for tuning, completely ignoring the OBD-II.

OK, confirmed. My Galant VRG has a OBD-II connector under the steering wheel. Simply move your left hand down and you can feel the 16-pin connector mounted on a metal bracket (for easy mechanic access I guess) ..

I will find more information in time to come .. definitely!

Hi,

Does Mazda Protege 1.6L (manual) have a OBDII port? [confused]

I found a "Diagnostic" grey socket inside engine compartment near to wiper-motor and battery negative terminal/bracket. [confused][confused][confused]

I may consider Palm OS OBDII tools. Any expert advice? [:)][:)]

OBDII is a mandatory standard in the US, so for cars not slated for export to the US they may have some other generic diagnostic port or standards. Check your owner's manual or ask the dealer service dept.

OBDII terminal looks like a trapizoid connector. [;)]

I believe the OBDII connector would usually be in the passenger compartment. Look under your drivers' side dash. You should find a trapezoid female connector if there's one in your car.
