Windscreen washer fluid

For those who like to add the detergent or cleaning liquid everytime they top up the water reservoir for the windshield water.

My experience is too much of everything is not good. I used to top up the liquid detergent everytime I top up the water tank to the top. One day, realise that the water did not spray when I selected water to wipe the windshield. Can hear the sound of the motor zezezezeze but no water comes out. Check the water reservoir, got water.

Worry, don't know where the motor is located also, traced the hose and finally realise that it is located inside the front right fenders, but don't know where exactly. Call the agent and ask for the price and labour cost, can't remember costs but its not very cheap, think more than $50.

So try DIY to see whether can salvage the situation first b4 let agent do, save time and money. Go under car and open the plastic guard on right fender and finally located the motor, remove it and found that the orifice (hole) for the water passage was tiny and at the inlet side glumly stuff (liquid cleaner) that stays in the bottom of the water reservoir have travelled to the inlet and jammed the passage.

So clean it using a water hose, and fitted it back, eureka it works. Happy put back everythings. However, next day, stuck again, so remove again and this time do a thorough cleaning, even the water tanks also removed and clean, don't give chance.

After that, not dare to use the liquid solution anymore, just water will do. Some of these "cleaner or detergent" cause the passage to stuck. For info my car then was an elantra - cateye model.

Depends on the type of cleaner additive and also the quantity added. I usually use the minimal recommended as I don't experience lotsa highway bug splatters so don't need strong cleaning power from the washer.

Too much and the gunk as Sky mentioned goops up the entire pump orifice. [shocked]

When you add to the water tank, you see them dissolve and thought thats fine. What actually happen is after the car settle down on a hot day, especially when you park your car in open spaces, the heat somehow cause the heavier solution to settle to the base, and at the same time fused the tiny molecules together to form grimly stuff, bit by bit, slowly but steadily.

I also used to add a tiny bit, but still kenna. Best save money and repair cost, add water will do.

I also dont add detergents or additives to the washer water. Water works just fine if the wiper blades r in good condition.

Another reason is that detergents r wetting agents which assists the water to penetrate n get everything wet, including the metal of the car. It washes away oil n grease n anti rust agents too.

This will cause premature rust as what happened to my earlier cars.

Ya, Adding cleaning agent is actually creating more problems with little or no advantage to the washing of windscreen.

The topic was brought up to highlights to all the potential problems if we add something that does not benefit but create more headache. Even if we add these solution, u will noticed some stain on the windscreen cannot be removed by spraying a mixture of cleaning agent added to your water tank.

The problems of blocked passage will not be evident immediately, it takes many months b4 it surfaced. And the process is expediated when you parked your car in the hot sun and during the hot period.

Neutral Newbie

Does using a milder kinda washing liquid helps?

I think what should be done is not to constantly JUST top up, but to flush the entire system with clean water regularly, ie. run clean water through the whole system before you top up with soapy solution.

This should reduce the residue in the pump and tube. Anyone wanna try?

Maybe those of you who did not encounter problems should start a list of "recommended" brands. That way, everyone benefits ...

Polyglaze

Gold Eagle "Heet"

Autosol

One funny malaysian brand gave me problem of film like substance floating around the washer reservoir so I had to flush it out.

Hi

I would really recommend many made of cars to try out windscreen fluid from Performance Motors Limited. Its really a good fluid that does not have above mentioned problems. Many frds of mine, to my surprises, from Volvo Club, SHC are purchasing from PML and it cost abt $7-8/- and its contents its rather worth it. Just go to the spare parts counter at PML and you could ask to purchase.

Cheers [:)]

One tips is not to top up your water to the brim of the reservoir, 3/4 fill should be fine, it does allow the water to sloch and mix thoroughly during the drive, giving no chance for the accumulation of the substance.

I realised that, I used to top up to full and thus have this problem of the slime. For those who have used cleaners, a safety precaution is leave enough room for water to mix.inside the reservoir.
