Skoder Neutral Newbie March 8, 2004 Share March 8, 2004 Hi, I need to ask about the performance, FC and maintainance of the Optra. Read a lot on Chevy, but not many actually own it...I have already placed an order for it...will come this weekend... Any advise anyone? ↡ Advertisement
Matthatter Neutral Newbie March 8, 2004 Share March 8, 2004 Hi Skoder, Welcome to the Chevy family! I drive an optra (since Nov'03). No regrets! The car is heavier than most Jap 1.6l, so the trade-off is a slightly slower (only a wee-bit) acceleration, for a much more stable ride. Try holding 185km/h long distance and you'll know what I mean! I just love the suspension. Smooth gear changes and good torque. FC can be a little erratic...come to think of it...my driving can be a little erratic . Guess it all depends on your driving style, highway/city mileage, pissed/not pissed etc. One thing I've noticed, is that my Chevy gets noticeably thirsty in start-stop traffic (more obvious than my last car, a Honda). Getting between 9.5km/l to 11.5km/l. Just finished my 10K (free) servicing, so don't know if regular servicing will be expensive or not. GM is the largest car maker in the world, so should not have problems getting parts. Cost may be another thing. Remember...it's got a 60l fuel tank...so don't freakout when you pump your 1st full tank of 98octane! Just my 2 cents! Happy driving!

Rskc 5th Gear March 8, 2004 Share March 8, 2004 Hi All, I have been reading MCF for a while now and just got myself registered. I got my Optra about a week ago and I have no regrets for it!! It is simply fantastic. I test drove 5 cars before I decided on Optra. Below are the cars I test drove and my comments: Subaru Impreza - stable but cramp, acceleration slow. (According to Torque Mag: 13.5sec for 0-100km/h sprint) Mazda 3 - continental feel but back seat is very cramp, no power and certainly over-priced. (12.6sec - Torque Mag again) Toyota Altis - good car. Quiet. typical Japanese feel. Too many on road(no offence intended here) Opel Meriva - Cannot make it. The gearbox sucks... Chevrolet: Quiet, Smooth, Very very stable, Very Spacious, and most of all it has got the continental feel!! Has decent acceleration too! Personally, I feel it has the combination of all the other cars' good points. And it is reasonably priced!! So far i have already hit about 500km and my fuel consumption is about 10+km/l, combi of city drive, highway(PIE) and traffic jams at CTE. BTW, my Optra is black too... Just my 2 cents worth above.. Slayer Clutched March 8, 2004 Share March 8, 2004 Test drive an Optra before. It has better sound insulation compared to the impreza TS. Smooth ride too. i think i mentioned before , i still find it odd to have the handbrake on the passenger side. Although the FC is a little at the higher side, but hey, the car price saving can compensate that.

Matthatter Neutral Newbie March 9, 2004 Share March 9, 2004 You're right. Mine's an auto, black...with the silver interior trim (no wood). Can't remember getting any freebies though...then again I've always sucked at bargaining! I opted not to have the reverse sensors...it's a personal thing/choice. Also opted not to have the disc changer in the boot, switched to a front loader (old school lah!), plus was afraid I'd knock it loading/unloading the golf sets. Skoder Neutral Newbie March 9, 2004 Author Share March 9, 2004 yep... changers at the back is always a hindrance for loading of my golf bag...I told them to remove the "ah peh" trimmings too for the silver ones... Me sucks at bargaining, heart too soft to chew those SE... can only nibble a bit then let go... nervertheless, do enjoy your ride... so conduct a meetup soon... Bossman Neutral Newbie March 9, 2004 Share March 9, 2004 (edited) Hi All, Chevrolet: Quiet, Smooth, Very very stable, Very Spacious, and most of all it has got the continental feel!! Has decent acceleration too! Bro,it is a rebadged Daewoo, how continental can it get ? Edited March 9, 2004 by Bossman
Skoder Neutral Newbie March 9, 2004 Author Share March 9, 2004 I have test driven almost all 1.6l cars sg can offer...(no bragging intended.) Compare Jap and Conti. Choose conti(personal opinion), just like the stable feel when you do a 150km on a gradual bend... My ex Honda Civic have to change rims, suspension and full body kit to feel close to that... Then Megane II, Ford focus, Opel Astra, etc (currently driving skoda Octavia ) Think that Chevy Optra is value for money lor... wish that it has tiptronic, trip computer, autowindow for passengers as well, more storage area, 5 door (easier to load/unload stuff), at least a dual SRS, nicer handbrakes and brake assist. kekeke want cheap and green what... Rskc 5th Gear March 9, 2004 Share March 9, 2004 Hi Bro, Optra was not in my radar sreen when I was searching for a new car. Its distributor just happened to be at Ubi and that why I tried. During the test drive, I was impressed by its handling(again personal opinion here) and immediately put it into my list of choice. In fact the Sales guy asked me to do a very fast turn at the old airport road round about. I really pushed hard till the tyres screamed. Not convinced, I did one more time and came out feeling good. With its pricing, it may not be the best among the conti cars but I personally feel that it is value for money(I, no money, poor guy lah). Not sure if it is a re-badged Daewoo cos I search the net for it before i bought. It seems like it is the first car jointly developed by GM and GM's Korea Technical Centre (former Daewoo R&D bought over by GM). Again I might be wrong. Do correct me if wrong. :) ChEErs.. Ah_veo Neutral Newbie March 9, 2004 Share March 9, 2004 i think RSKC is rite. unlike other models, Optra is not a re-badged from Daewoo. it is a totally new car brought in by Chevrolet,GM(General Motors).
