"suspect poor quality."

Hi! there, Ace_T,

Previously, when I was driving a Honda Civic, I'd apply a bit of grease, on the bellows of the boot, where it touches each other, to prevent too much friction, caused by turning.

thot the boot would only extend or compress while the CV bar was turning.

Hi! there, Ace_T,

The boot turns together with the drive shaft, so the bellows are touching as it roll along, during a turn.

Noise from the cv-joint happens when the grease has leaked out from the dust-boot, then no more lubrication.
also because sand & small particles get stuck inside the joins wink.gifwink.gifwink.gif

"issit due to the driveshaft as well???"

Hi! there, Greddy82,

Check the ball-joint at the tie-rod. See also the wear pattern of your brake rotor.

I just changed both my front drive shafts for less than $400.. new ones.. not recon...

while you are changing yours, i suggest u replace the oil sill too... [;)]

Recently whenever I do a left or right turn or U-turn there are rattling sounds from my drive shaft. I guess its gone.

Need a reliable workshop. Went to CAS n was quoted S$450. Went to Proserv n was quoted S$400. For both drive shaft.

My car '89 Honda Civic GL.

Any cheaper and reliable workshop???

"but interested to learn..."

Hi! there, Greddy82,

The first thing you need to know, is the parts of your car, where it's located, how it's assembled & removed. Finally, how to trouble-shoot defective components.

A mechanic is more experienced in all this, so send it to your w/shop.

If you can re-create the noise just by rocking your car, then it's something that's rubbing, most probably it's the suspension system, things like the anti-roll bars and it's mountings or shock absorbers. Jacking the car up may disengage all contacts.

Make sure the parts in the wheel well are secured properly and not touching any suspension & brake components. Check also your engine mounts and exhaust system.

Had the same problem with my 5 years old Nissan Sunny SS after I got it from a second hand car dealer.

Changed at a Workshop in Tampines --> MotoGard [AAA approved workshop]--> $500

a) Purchased car in July 03 at 40k Km after surrender 2.3 years old Hyundai Trajet due to poor resale value and high fuel consumption [7km/litre]

b) Changed drive shafts in Sept 03 after motorised bicycle bang into rear left door & bumper. Kind of repair at the same time.

c) Complain rattling noise in Nov 03 on full right turn. Changed FOC.

d) Complain rattling noise in 7 Feb 04 on both left and right. Changed FOC-->transmission oil inclusive.

Feedback from workshop is that 3 customers had the same problem and workshop claim parts were made in Thialand. Suspect it may be a batch issues. Didn't argue as it is a FOC changed.

Don't really know whether it is recon or new but visually, it looks new.

Since 7 Feb 04, both drive shafts are doing fine as I try not to do full-lock in Multi storey Carpark or U turn. Advise from experienced driver is not to frequently over stretch the drive shaft.

Hope this helps and I am still monitoring.

Regards,

It coming to 4 months since I changed both drive shafts. Already covered about 13,000km and being to KL and back. No rattling sound during U turn and looks like the drive shafts are doing welll. Maybe it is really a material or shaft worksmanship issue.

I think Motorgard is ok as they do honour warranty replacement due to parts premature failure.

Do be take note workshop tends to ask you to change tyres etc, etc, etc. I am using their service pkg of using ELF synthetic engine oil at $45 [including flter change] and so far it seems ok i.e. no overheating or abnormal noise.

Cheers,

Wow! u clocked 13,000km in 4 months!!!

Their servicing package using ELF oil is value for money and i have used it many times but they always physcho me change this change that.. thats why very scared to go there.

Now every servicing must go back to agent due to warranty and a basic servicing is so ex... [shakehead]

One or both of your cv boot/s is torn or has a hole in it. the cv boot keeps the drive shaft lubricated and dirt/debris out of the gears that turn your wheels. chances are that you might already need a new half shaft.
