Armored_Saint Neutral Newbie February 27, 2004 Share February 27, 2004 (edited) I stumbled upon these 2 pictures on vehicle steering and suspension recently and remembered that some folks here may not know the name for some, or all of the components. Wrxblue 1st Gear March 6, 2004 Share March 6, 2004 (edited) thanks for the pics, something to add only.... your first pic layout is called the Macpherson strut design suspension layout. it does not have a driveshaft in the pic becoz of it should be a rear-driven setup. For FWD cars there should an additional of a drive shaft and gear box in this layout... and the second pic is showing a rear wheel driven setup with a final drive transfer box. Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie March 6, 2004 Share March 6, 2004 "hw come" Hi! there, MondeoST220, It's a 1890s frog-designed suspension by Bouton De-dion, maker of De-dion cars & engines. Used by the Alfa Romeo racing team to win the first few World championship (present F1 races), on the Alfetta Tipo 158/159, which till today is still the winningest car in world championship, with 33 race victories, of which 26 in a row, from 1946-1951. To think that horseface is paid so much just to try to win. It's also on the last Alfetta-design cars made by Alfa Romeo which effectively made them bankrupt, and taken over by Fiat, as the cars were sold at below manufacturer's cost. It's possibly the most expensive suspension system used in production cars, as only super grade cars uses them currently, e.g. Aston Martin Vantage, Lotus7 Superlight, etc.... So, my car is one of the last rear-wheel drive Alfa Romeo, together with the ES30 Alfa SZ, which btw, is the best handling limited production car in the world, the nearest rival from Ferrari don't even come close. Here's the link to an Alfa SZ site: http://home.wxs.nl/~evdbeek/monster.html Below is the World Championship winner, Alfetta Tipo 158/159. Pauly75ts Neutral Newbie March 6, 2004 Share March 6, 2004 "which are FWD not so "alfa"?" Hi! there, MondeoST220, Classic Alfa owners around the world calls it "AlFiat". Drifting & donuts puts too much a strain on the differential, as it has an LSD. Rgds Paul Yong
