Air Con Filter

I sort of remember a thread warning about air-con filter's condition after a couple of months or years of driving around. Last weekend, thought of taking a look inside my 1 month old Altis but do not know where it is. Any bros here know?

According to what I know, BM did not include air-con filter for your ride. You have to buy and put it in yourself. Maybe they think the air in our country is clean enough. [;)]

i remembered that Altis doesn't come with an aircon-filter compartment in the first place. Pretty sure 1.6 models doesn't have 1, not too sure about the 1.8 ones.

personally, i feel that it's good to have a filter for the car as the air circulating within is extremely dirty.

recently, my colleague who's driving a 3 yr old sunny complains that the air blower is getting blowing lesser and lesser air out. i pop the aircon-filter out and the filter was totally covered with dust. i got to soak the whole filter for 2 hours and then wash it totally inside out for 5 times before getting all these dirts to come off. but after fixing it back, she's over the moon on the airflow again [thumbsup]

Thanks Patlyesp and Cordia_gsr. Cordia, if Altis no filter at the blower, although air is dusty, but at least won't have air blockage. Hehe [laugh]

Cordia, the aircon filter u help your friend removed, is it at the dash where u can access just by taking out the glove compartment or something?

Hi Kardachia,

Yes, without a filter it will have less tendency to block up. I personally try not to wind down the windows when i drive. Reasons: 1. Cabin will be less dusty. 2. The carpet surround the pillars and roof will not get mixed with dirt. So keep windows wind up at all times does help. Let me share with you a bit on this. Pardon the long message [:p]

Actually, I have come out with such thinking after my previous cars experiences. None of these cars have aircon filters.

1. Honda Accord. I would down the windows every morning because i can't stand the loss of power with the aircon running with cold starts.

Results: The whole car interior was dirty and dusty. All the dust get into the aircon ducts and louvers. Aircon speed number 4 is just like 2.5 speed. Eventually, the cooling coil got choked up with dust and fails.

2. Honda Civic. I reckon that in the day there are more cars and thus the air gets dirtier. So i control myself not to wind down the windows in the day and when there are a lot of cars on the road.

Results: The whole car interior was less dirty and dusty. Very minor dust gets into the aircon ducts and louvers. Eventaully, the cooling coil leaks due to unforseen circumstances and got to change. Oops [confused]

3. Ford Laser. I force myself not to wind down the windows at all costs. Of course, only for paying for parking. [laugh]

Results: The car interior is clean and nice after 3 years old usage when it has reached 10 years lifespan. The cooling coil is good as before. No breakdowns and aircon speeds are as good as before.

As for the sunny, you are right. The aircon filter can be accessed by removing the glove box. In fact, there is a sticker inside the glove box stating that the car is equipped with an aircon filter elements and recommended to be cleaned at an regular interval [thumbsup]

I think from now on, I'll not wind down my window any more, unless paying parking of course. I dunno about others but I find the Altis during cold start seems a little bit powerful as I think it's in the algorithm of the ECU to do so during cold start. Once the engine is warm up...kinda like lose a bit of power. [:/]

even if the windows are wound down but as long as the blower is running and air-recirculation turned off, the air will flow thru the air duct system into the car interior, so it seems unlikely that the dust which gets into the car via the windows will travel against the air flow into the air duct system... true/false?? smile.gif

many thanks

Mine was an old model. 1993 to be exact so this one doesn't come with the air filter.

But i believe that the newer models, 1998 to 2004 does have it but it's best to reconfirm again.

As for the dirt inside the vents, i would need to disnmantle the vents and clean it the hard way.
