FYI..

Budget would include the following:

1) Downpayment / initial payment: even for those 0% down one you still need to fork out the following:

- Insurance: can be very high for your situation... even a normal Jap car can cost you $2k-3k coz you just passed and you are 27 right? tongue.gif

- 1st monthly payment

- Transfer fee of car: varies from car to car.. got to ask dealer to check or check yourself on Onemotoring.com.sg (just need the car plate)

- Other "Admin" fee by the dealers unimpressed.gif

The above would constitute your first cash outlay.

You might need to let AA/Vicom etc. check the car before you sign the dotted line and you might need to cater for first servicing straightaway coz you never know how long the car has been sitting there or the last time the previous owner service it.

3) Then you need to consider how much can you fork out monthly and that would have to include at least the following:

- Monthly payment

- Petrol

- Season Parking

4) Other thjings:

- Road Tax: get those already paid for at least 4-5 months by the dealers wink.gif

- Budget for next road tax and insurance renewal sweatdrop.gif

oops.. saw your nick, tot 27.. tongue.giflaugh.gif

Bike license no use bro... Have a 2A too and I was riding for 7-8yrs before I decided to get my car license - I was 29 when I got my first car in 02 (about 3 months after I got my license)... insurance premium still pretty hefty.. you will probably still expect to fork out $2k plus to $3k for the insurance frown.gif

Try to narrow down the make & model you want to make comparison. I have bought 2 used car before and in both instances I always try to get a 1 owner car and less than 3 yrs old. Cos still under agent warranty. If u are buying from a dealer, they will settle everything for u at a fee.

For newbie, i suggest to get a new korean car. Won't feel so much heart ache with scratches and tiny bumps...Can upgrade after 4 years.....

I suggest this. Either go with Morris' idea of getting a used Korean car of 2yrs old or like me get a COE car that is left 1-2yrs.

The idea is this. You need a car that can leave you unperturbed in driving and learning local road manners (or uncivilized road behavior). You don't worry too much about the damage repair cost till it freaks you out of driving.

At the same time, it also shows you the fundamentals of vehicle maintenance. Driving is part of it only. You want the car to keep going. So the responsibility of the owner is not just to drive it but to maintain and house it. These come easily with a new car but with increasing difficulty with a used or older car because you don't know its history.

Many yrs ago when i bought my first car after getting my licence, i went for a 1 litre HB. A couple of minor accidents but i dun feel much heartache. Afterall it was just a 2nd hand cheap car. In the process, i brush up my driving skill.
