Neutral Newbie

Hi, guys. I am a newbie here. My wife and I are looking around for a new car to replace our 4 yrs + Nissan.

We have narrowed down to Altis 1.8 or the Skoda and hv test-drive both. I hv read quite good review for both cars. We like the Octavia look, the drive, especially the road holding part [thumbsup] . But the Altis scored well in terms of interior finishes and price (abt 83 k for the deluxe while the Octavia is asking for 90k for their premium package). We think we can bargain the price of Octavia down if we are really keen. But there is always a tussle between Jap and Conti cars in terms of service support, resale value etc.... [:(]

there isn't many recent discussions on Octavia on this forum. So could any kind soul out there share yout latgest view/experience abt driving and owning Octi? [confused]

Thanks

how these two models compare in terms of yearly depreciations?? ........ also, i guess the toyota will be easier to sell when you try to sell it later...

personally i prefer the look and handling of the octavia thought...smile.gifsmile.gif

If I recall correctly, it is about S$7k p.a. for Altis 1.8 and 7.6k for Octavia.... yes, we like to look and feel of Octi... the Altis looks a bit flimsy and too common. But the resale of Octi is always a concern. [:|]

seems like octavia's resale value is your onli bugbear against getting it. (which i hv to agree is on the poorer side). then why not go for a 1 or 2 yr used one and save heaps of $$?

Hi W,

Welcome to MCF and enjoy your stay. Do just us in weekly meetup. thumbsup.gif

There are same query (on Skoda Octavia) by other forumer previously. Try to search for it. For more Octavia discussion, go to VAG section. nod.gif

Personally driving the Octy, like what you've mention, the look, ride, handling, road feeling, etc is excellent. thumbsup.gif Service support is no problem as most VAG workshop can handle. You also dun have that "me too" issue over Altis.

Slight problem is more difficult to get bodykits as compare to Jap car. shakehead.gif

bro...

if u r conservative... go 4 Altis

if u like excitement... go 4 Octavia...

Getting the Altis is like getting married...

Getting the Octavia is like having a long term affair...

are u getting rid of the sunny coz it's giving problems or u bored of driving it? if it's the latter, going for the altis is like prolonging the sentence.

thanks - read most of those discussions. just like to see any fresh ideas... bodykits not an issue. Don't intend to do much if we buy it...

good to hear that support is no problem.

I was at Czech Auto yesterday and the sales exe said that the Traffic Police is seriously considering to purhcase Octi for patrol...

the main reason is the high COE.... coming to five years and the car starts to show signs of old age...

Hey !! That's what JTA (ex-Skoda dealer) said 3 years ago when I test drive the Octy. laugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif

BTW, Octy is indeed a Policecar in Czech. thumbsup.gif

Had my octy for almost 3yrs now. On top of the usual comments, like handling etc, the followings are my joys & woes of owning a octy.

Even till now whenever I see an octy on the road, I'll remark to my wife "Hey, that's another octy on the road!" and try to close up to see who's the driver. Can't imagine doing that driving an corolla or sunny.

On the safety aspect, it is truly a hardy car built like a tank. Just had an accident last wed. Traffic turned green, cars move, I move, car in front stop, I BANG. Proton wira backside cave in, my octy front bonnet dented, but no injury to the engine. The front bumper has steel underneath the plastic.

No major issues so far, just normal servicing and wear&tear. But will probably change car once problems start to set in, hopefully not so soon.

Go Malaysia not worried people steal your car. Car can take 1 full flight of golfers including golf bags.

Downside is of course the resale value. But 1st day I bought the car, I already calculate using scrap value and not resale value, so mentally prepared.

Get the Octy and dun worry about resale value beacsue there is none, at most the dealer would give you a couple of K above scrap. More true now with the pending changes to the rebate system furious.gif
