Read this recently in an overseas forum, read it if you use things like Armour All:

"......... you're spot on adam, armour all does cause cracking - if you start using it DO NOT STOP and do it regularly - when you stop - leave it a while and it will crack!

it has a silicone in it which goes brittle in sunlight and, if, the plastic is not regularly treated the silicone hardens which causes the cracking.

a guy years ago who tinted my windows on my old commodore suggested i use

baby oil!.....

I heard that it causes cracking cause it makes the dash needy (an addict) and if it is used to the stuff, and then doesn't get it, that it will crack easier than if it weren't an addict.

So I just heard that if you do armor-all or another product, that you have to do it all the time and can't let the dash dry out...

but i see the top of my dashboard whole day under the hot sun, heart pain: like our skin, maybe it needs some kind of protection? right now, i use a big piece of those anti-slip rubber mat to cover it up - kinda unsightly, to pull a windscreen sunshade is another alternative, any better idea? Maybe these plastic dashboard is tough enough for hot sun?

cheers

yeah, for my 73 old lady, i have ordered a custom made loose cover for the dashtop, but for my 99 camry, you think the dashtop is made to withstand heat and ultro violet light etc? maybe it is and i don't have to really worry so much [:/]

Thanks

Try using a water based vinyl protectant like Vinylex, can be gotten from ACE Hardware @ Novena Sq.

Alternatively use a large aluminum piece of sunshade placed in behind your windscreen.
