Hello everyone,

Recently i test drive my car on a carpark playing cornering and realise that my rear tyres fishtail and ski very badly and even go out of course during play. Was using continental tyres for the rear tyres (supposely heard it was meant to be comfort use) and front tyres BFGoodrich G-Force3. I hope anyone bro out there can advise what kind of tyres to get for my rear (which is the one that have no grip) tyres? the design? brand? est cost? Thanks alot.

bro, what car u driving first???

2. what rim are u using???

3. have u got any suspension setup???

from your description, i suppose you are driving a FWD (front wheel drive) car....your front tires is G-Force3, which i suppose got quite alot of grip and your rear is conti- comfort type....at abt 30-40km/h with a hard twist at corner, with super soft suspension setting....your car flexes and develop no traction at rear plus understeering, which could be super dangerous if u go faster cos your car tends to roll outward when exiting the corners [sweatdrop][sweatdrop][sweatdrop] ....u must be really BRAVE or u planning to sell your car in near future...... [sweatdrop][sweatdrop][sweatdrop]

i would suggest u do a undercarriage setup first before playing out in your carpark, or best do it when no cars is around u at least 50 metres of radius or more, cos when u lost control of your car, u never know whats going to happen next [:)]

Thanks bro for your time to reply.

I'm using taiwan rim SSP 4.8kg 15 inch and currently on stock shocks & springs. Basically, because of my car not lowered during corners make it unstable.

You are right, im on a front wheel driver, driving lancer 92 glxi. Suppose to test run the car and check out what are the potential problems pose during the action. Realise now the tyres post a very significant problem. Just bought the car and hope to try out it limits. You were talking about undercarriage setup? would be grateful if you could brief me what kind of set up to be done? Tyres to look out for? Would 16 inch be better when being played?

After this lesson, even when playing with handbrake i realise that my car easily run out of course unless steer back to position. These problems really cant get off my mind till i resolve them. I hope you could advise me on various setup to improve my ride. Thank you!

firstly...for a lancer'92..the stock shocks and springs arent design to support ur wheels in such a way that it provides maximum contact/traction with the ground...they are generally comfort bias...thus i tink the problem doesnt only lies with your wheels.

Lowering and changing to stiffer springs sure will help but also if u lower too much...im afraid ur stock shocks oso had to be changed.

16 inch wheels sure will provide more accurate turn as the wheel profile is lower, thus disallowing too much flex of the wheel wall during cornering, and thus ur car will be more responsive to directional change.

Hmmm..for the handbrake trickery...im nt sure whether FF cars is suitable for it...bt it provides occasional fun yea?! [thumbsup][thumbsup]

Ok thx bro for the reply.

So actually the problem lies in my lowering of car and the shocks that can handle my car?

I'm looking forward to koni or KYB shocks with lowered sport springs and changing to 16 inch, hopefully it gives me better results for it. any comments?

think have to consider front tower struct bar..

if really hardcore driving, then rear struct and thicker anti-roll/sway bars undernead..

How about the tyre pressure? Too high rear pressure compared to the front can induce oversteer. Conversely, if rear tyre pressure is too low, can slip and slide too as the tyre wanted to come out of the wheel during high lateral G cornerings.

There are other stuffs like rims offset, tyres condition..etc for you to consider. Figure out the root of the problem before spending money on new items that don't need replacing at all.

As for tyres, i would suggest yokohamas ES100. this is superb on wet & dry roads. I would not say there are VERY comfortable....but they ain't bad to ride on =D

cheers

bro, i have drove that car before...personally, i feel the steering is too featherlite for hard corners.....Dangerous would be the word to describe it.....tires, i have mentioned to u already....different tires have different grip level and it's also dependent on what undercarriage setup u doing....

now coming to the undercarriage, it consists of shock/ spring/ tires/ rim/ brake.....u need to have good brake to do fast corners.....simple theory, racing line to do corners...slow in fast out....for shock and spring, it doesn't really mean lowering your car make it good....might as well cut your stock spring, low right???? WRONG!!! aftermarket are stiffer than original, and they are comparatively lower for the purpose of lower the car centre of gravity (CG).... FWD car weight mass distribution is setup as 60 front 40 rear, this mean car are heavier in front, and this is very important if u doing corners....u need to set front slightly harder as compared to the rear so that when u dive into the corner, your nose don't dip downwards which will cause your car to roll, and understeer.....therefore, it's important to do a proper setup for suspension setting for hard corners car.....

LSD is an additional device of assisting driver's to do corner.....reason is that assuming u are turning right, your left wheel will move much faster than the right wheel to carry the speed around the corner....and this is a form of power loss....if u have an LSD, both wheel will be compensating each other for balance speed through the bend, which is safer and faster....AWD car is another car that is extremely well in corners cos all wheel is moving around the corners...

coming to rims, i don't think u wanna scratch your tires all the way when doing a fast corner....reason being that the side wall will be lower, and if your tire selection is softer compound, your side wall will bloat....so it's best to go for 14-15 rim if u intend to do corners....16 and above will be good for drag, but provided u got the ponies to bring you through...and best would be turbo car [thumbsup]

if u are very keen about corners, u can try to do toe heel as well....saaber has a thread in the resource column....very good and informative, but please do it when no cars is around cos u will be kind of lathargic when trying out first few times....get some round of practise....u will handle better....

Guess i have been talking far too much than my usual self.... [laugh][laugh][laugh] ...if u like to learn more, come to the meetup so that we can share our experience with u [thumbsup][nod]

Heard from many of the bros here that Kumhos are pretty cheap and good.

Myself am using Conti CSC2s... good, quiet, but bloody expensive. Next time won't spend so much.

You have a very keen eye to spot the tyres make as well !!

IMHO, Toyos are a underrated tyre...distributor SBT Tyre here is a small player and thus quite low exposure for the brand. They are good tyres and most of the range is still made in Japan cos they are not a big player and do not have factory overseas.

Try the Vimode if you want mid level performance or if you are hardcore...T1S would be a good choice. For ultimate hardcore, go for the R1R.
