In Indonesia you can buy "mixed-grade and mixed brand" engine oil. They mixed all the remaining oil from servicing and sell them cheap. No waste, save green.

API SG is obsolete now. But anything after SG (SL/SJ/SM) will work.

Ok, questions now is... should I do a compression test before going with a thinner oil? Just to make sure that I don't have huge gaps between the rings?

as of now, it's sipping a little oil.

Hi !

Information taken from toyota starlet, 1992 model

Engine oil selection

Use engine oil of the following API grade SG or better, if cannot get SG or better, you may use SF grade

Recommended viscosity is

15w40

10w30

5w30

20w50

When I owned the 1992 model starlet, always use 15w40, from Castrol or Idemenitsu

However, Idemenitsu is the racing type which towards the 4000 km mark would be downt to 3/4 mark of the oil dipstick and starting is very sluggish and need to hold the ignition key longer by a couple of minutes.

However, both oil give very good mileage, average of 13 km/litre on shell 92.

Had wanted to switch to 20w50 Castrol GTX, but more problems surface such as suspension, electrical, etc and had to give it up after 6 months, so did not see the effect of thicker oil.

Had used 20w50 on my previous daihatsu charade cx and this oil gives good mileage of 13.5 km/litre for a 3 cylinder engine

Have not tried 10w30 or 5w30 synthetic which I think is for new type of engine.

Currently also using castrol 15w50 GTX on my suzuki swift GTi and mileage is not too good, arould 11 lk/litre, maybe it is due to the higher engine capacity

If you have the tools, you should do it.

However, I normally check the dipstick weekly and how fast the engine gets cranked up after the engine oil change.

My experience based on 15w40 and 20w50 mineral oil is that the drop in oil level is more for 15w40 and difficulty cranking more significant also for 15w40.

20w50 is more stable from my experience, but have not experience using it on the starlet.

I used a 5W30 for an EP70. No leaks.

YMMV. 5W30 is not just for new cars. If they old car has good rings, it can take it and will thank you for it.

read in some of your previous posts about diesel oils contain good cleaning effects.

i suppose the end result it'll translate to better fuel economy and restore power?

Bad for FC. Most HDEOs are 15W40. Good for COE beaters when you don't know who screwed them up bad in the past.

If yours is a new car, just use a nice 30wt.
