Didn't try cxxxxxe. Can't as my car is on dino oil diet. It is made by the Car4Cars company from UK. The ones that makes CarPlan detailing products. As long as engine don't grind to pieces can already. But dunno if it is like RP. Syn oil yet every 5k must change or oil will be sheared until cannot protect.

Its true that RP do have thinning issue but look at the UOA. Its proven that even with thinning the oil still protect very well, even comparable with Castrol SLX as shown in UOA.

This UOA is done by one of our Spore bro..

this is a really old thread, but i'm gonna dig some bones.

i have a 16 year old starlet. the previous owner claimed he used Helix Ultra 5W40 (synth blend) and he "found it to be the best" - which means he used a few other types of oil before.

should i continue using that? or should i change to another synthetic blend? or maybe Grp IV even?

also: should i to a "wash" the engine with Delvac/HDDEO first?

fyi, 5000km would probably take me about 20 weeks (5 months).

Correction. RP is Group IV PAO synthetic with Group I/II carrier. New engines seem to benefit from RP as they are still structurally strong. Ken at the TCS @ Delphiforums has commented that it has should be OK if you don't exceed 10k/6mths. Dealer has not overpriced the oil locally. Pretty good for many drivers here as many would have new cars.

I'm gonna ride on this old thread and ask the expert too.

Bro my mileage is 55k and average 13k/6mth. So RP 5w30 is not recommended for me? What about Schaeffer #9000?

I used to use the Schaeffer #7000 during the first 30k. Frankly now with RP can't feel the diff. [sweatdrop]

Thanks!

The Starlet can take oil down to 5W30 but you got to thread carefully. If you are on 5W40 now, throw in a 10W30 to see if any leaks develop. If no after 10k, use the 5W30. You will realize a lot of power is "released".

If you want to wash the engine. Look for AutoRx. I think someone is selling it. Best for cleaning.

I am a jaded driver. Looking for the bottom dollar. Cheap oil at the correct weight appeals to me. Synthetic doesn't even look attractive unless it is at dino oil prices.

are we talking fully synthetic or mineral?

i'm assuming the 10W30 oil is slightly heavier than the 5W30?

what about the "other theory" that 50wt oil increases compression, thus "releasing" more power?

cheers

bro genie,

i dug up some 2E literature for the Corolla.

for Singapore climate, the 2E engines can take:

10W30 (-18 deg C and up)

10W40

10W50

20W40 (-12 deg C and up)

20W50

single grade SAE30 (4 deg C and up)

5W30 should apparently be avoided for SG weather (for 8 deg C and below only).

so i'm assuming this is the same for the Starlets, so does that mean i should avoid 0W30 that you suggested?

10W30 has less polymers too, since it has only a "difference" of 20 grades.

Throw this away. Obsolete thinking. 5W30 can be used even in this heat. Ask yourself this question. Will ambient temperature really affect engine temperature to a big degree when it is 100+ deg C compared to the hottest ambient we can have here at 33?

agree with you. even the owner's manual of my kia recommends the use of wt20 or 30 lubricant for maximum fuel economy.

one guide i always stick to... if you want to use wt20 or 30 lub, go for REALLY good quality ones as they dun compromise protection.

Hi !

Information taken from toyota starlet, 1992 model

Engine oil selection

Use engine oil of the following API grade SG or better, if cannot get SG or better, you may use SF grade

Recommended viscosity is

15w40

10w30

5w30
