Ravinged 5th Gear November 2, 2003 Share November 2, 2003 I have a loose hand brake problem ... sometimes can't engage the hand brake, it will drop back down. What to do? How much to change to a new one? Thanks, Ed ↡ Advertisement
Huggable Clutched November 2, 2003 Share November 2, 2003 Do you mean you have to pull the handbrake higher in order to park? If that's so you can get a mechanic to "tighten" the handbrake. If it doesn't work at all, the cable might be broken, get it fixed immediately!
Mmythos Neutral Newbie November 2, 2003 Share November 2, 2003 is it the catch problem? when u pull the handbrake is there any resistance or it's free pull?
Ravinged 5th Gear November 2, 2003 Author Share November 2, 2003 It's not exactly free pull ... can still feel the tension there when I pull my hand brake but it just doesn't lock in that position. I suspect it could be the nut that has become loosen. If it is just loosen, I may just have to screw it back ... what do you think? If the screw threads are fading, for safety reasons I rather change the whole hand brake system than to take the risk. Any good workshop? Ed
Ravinged 5th Gear November 2, 2003 Author Share November 2, 2003 Huggable, it is still the same when i pull it higher, it just doesn't lock. Ed
Huggable Clutched November 2, 2003 Share November 2, 2003 Ed, looks like the locking gear is not working. Get a mechanic to check it.

Eliew Neutral Newbie October 5, 2007 Share October 5, 2007 Steal this old thread ...after servicing recently, cannot pull handbrake up >15% when it was about 45% previously (not loose). Mechanic said they have adjusted to the 1st click. Is that ok?
Chucky2007 Turbocharged October 5, 2007 Share October 5, 2007 yap i think its true. my mechanic serviced my brake last month, after that handbrake lower and tighter.
Galantspeedz Turbocharged October 5, 2007 Share October 5, 2007 2-3 clicks will be better i guess. 1 click if you have a lady driving your vehicle then may have problem engaging or disengaging the handbrake.. as some strength is needed
Rickster 5th Gear October 5, 2007 Share October 5, 2007 I think thats quite alright. My car's handbrake can previously pull up to 4 notches. After adjustment, can only pull 2 notch. Been using it for a few months liao. So far so good.

Eliew Neutral Newbie October 5, 2007 Share October 5, 2007 Ya, not used to 1 notch, a bit too low .. used to be at least 3-4 and pull up without pressing the button. Now have to push the button then come up a little. So long as the handbrake icon light up should be ok?

Octopus 3rd Gear October 9, 2007 Share October 9, 2007 [reply] Ya, not used to 1 notch, a bit too low .. used to be at least 3-4 and pull up without pressing the button. Better trust the feel of tightness when you pull the handbrake lever, than trust the handbrake light on your panel.... My handbrake light had been lighted up everytime I turn on ignition key and thru out the journey, for the past 2 years or so due to micro-switch near the handbrake lever faulty.... Didn't bother to fix it cos still driveable. ↡ Advertisement
