- Inferior distributors in Singapore. Regent Motors, Car & Cars, Barcrelona Motors, Auto Exclusiv and JTA are not exactly as reputable as TanChong or Cycle & Carriage which are both listed. Even heard Massa Motors (Alfa & Fiat) is likely to close shop soon. JTA also rumoured to be in some troubles. This is a major factor as a poor distributor will not be able to instill the confidence the car buyers want in terms of after sales support. Remember Auto Asia? "

Maybe the market size is too small for too many players.....that's why they are not doing well....

MOst continental cars will probably need to send it back to authorised agent/garage to service...whereas an average japanese/korean made can go looking for "BOB".... [laugh]the one that has not got the proper tools [:/]

I guess, it is the myth created by many mechanics that continental cars are difficult to maintain, hence cost more. I have been and always been driving continental cars, 22 of them. Tried on many occassions to convert to japanese, somehow, the feel is not there unless you pay for an arm and a leg...and worse, items are made to changed and not maintain nor serviced. Hence it is more costly, in my view.

Err ... Massa Motors no more oredi la ... Euro Auto & TTS took over for Alfa and Fiat if I'm not wrong ...

not all Jap car distributors/dealers are good anyway, BM for e.g has very bad track record in after-sales svc ... I guess u pay a slight premium for contis ... but in return you get the better handling, very stable and enjoyable long distance drives (esp for up north), better interior quality (generally), more rigid and sturdy car bodies, better safety features NCAP ratings ...

Now that this forum has split up discussions on conti & Jap makes, wonder why our Conti (except Merz & BMW) makes like Renault, Opel, Seat, Skoda and Fiat are all quite discriminated against as seen by the low resale value. Whereas Jap makes like Mits, Toyota & Nissan have such excellent followings.

I have test drove Skodas , Seats and some Korean & Jap makes and I somewhat still think that the mid-level Conti makes are much superior than the Japs in terms of value for the money.

mid-level Conti maybe much superior to jap made in terms of finishing, engine refinement but still lack behind in areas like higher servicing cost/spare parts, heavier weight (for the FC conscious) which indirectly affects acceleration..oh, n they are generally more costly too..

Yeah.. for those who do not know.. quite a few of Merz parts are actually cheaper than Jap counterpart...

i think the notion that a conti weighs more is also part of the myth...... is it really that heavy?? sheesh, the weight may be the same, but just because the doors close with a thud doesn't mean the car is heavier!

also, what is it about conti having lousy FC? times have changed! the new Astra 1.6 MTA gives about 14-15km/litre and hte new focus 1.6 engine (the 115bhp) gives even more mileage compared to the astra! not to mention the golf 1.6FSI sipping fuel too!

and higher servicing costs?? darn, just ask any toyota bro how much they pay for a servicing at Borneo and the reality of jap servicing being cheaper is blown out of the water.

conti unreliable

conti FC lousy

conti Heavy

conti expensive to maintain

conti hard to get spare parts

darn, all lies, i tell yer! [shakehead]
