The driver of a red Toyota Corolla starting with SCE xxxx

Date: 16/10/03

Time: Approximately 7.10pm

Location: Bus-stop filter lane outside Kallang MRT

The scenario:

A bunch of colleagues and I was crossing the road when your car sped towards us. There was no traffic light at our point of crossing though.

You did not slow down upon seeing people on the road, and continued to speed towards us. You gave us a long horn before you initiated your left signal to indicate that you are going to filter into the bus-stop to pick up your wife/gf. For your information, when you gave your signal, you are only about 10 metres from us.

Yes, you almost knock us down. Thankfully, 7 of us managed to run onto the pedestrian path in that split second to escape the accident.

There are more than 10 witnesses at the bus-stop if that slipped your mind. A colleague quickly jotted your number in both his notepad and mobile phone SMS. A car behind you saw this incident and stopped by us. He told us that he saw no brake light from your car until you drove into the bus-stop lane. He is certain that you were giving a extremely late signal (about 10 metres) to indicate your intention. In addition, he has been following behind your car and is extremely sure you have been travelling at 90km/h, way past the speed limit on that road.

Never mind for this incident.

My message to this driver:

You are lucky you met us, that we are quick enough to literally leaped onto the pedestrian path. What do you think if it was an old man or old woman who is unable to react like us?

We have taken your car license plate and should we happen to see such a situation from you again, we will not hestitate to submit your license plate to the Traffic Police for reckless driving.

** Two public members whom we don't even know, resort to pointing their middle finger at you, which you ignored, either you did not see or purposely pretend not to see. Be glad that we give you enough respect not to do likewise.

Of course as stated there is no traffic light at point of crossing ... but does that mean you literally drive through?

So should I drive on the road, I see people crossing when there is no traffic light or any form of crossing, we will simply drive through over the people. Maybe that's a better choice.

Nothing wrong with horning in advance, as in the case we made a mistake there by crossing at the wrong place. We admit it's our fault. What is even more disturbing is he made no effort to even slow down. If he had, maybe it wouldn't put him in such bad light, not in front of us, but in full view of others at the bus-stop.

Cheerz

There certainly a traffic light for crossing ahead, you people are just too lazy to walk that distance. Th driver maybe at fault, but if everyone is to cross the road like u people do, then wat's the point of having traffic lights and pedestrians crossing?

Let me ask u, do u drive? Have u even encounter pedestrians who cross the road like they own the road and even when u horn at them, they still take their own sweet time to do the cat walk? Cos their mentality the same as ur's the driver, always think that the vehicle will not knock u down...

I think if the driver has seen you and your friends crossing the road way before he got close to where you were crossing (which i assume he did), he should have slowed down and sounded his horn to alert you guys.

I also assume that you and your friends did not dash out from the footpath suddenly onto the road. If there was the case, the driver did seem to be driving recklessly.

It is safer to cross where there is red light or pedestrian crossing. Even so, it is not a bad idea to check if there is any on coming traffic before we cross the road, just in case.

Well, certainly our fault for not crossing at the junction.

We did checked that the road was clear and did not dash across abruptly. He did indeed saw us from a distance away ... that is why we conclude that he should have ample time to slow down (not that we have the right to demand him to slow down). But when we put ourselves in the driver's shoes, do you slow down and take precaution when you see people crossing the road?

The problem is he made no effort to and attempt to run us down. We can't see his brake lights even if he engaged his brakes, but the driver that drove behind him and stopped us told us his brake lights wasn't even engaged throughout.

We would certainly be lying on hospital beds if we did not react fast enough when he sped out at a corner some distance away ... approximately 200 metres away.

You may like to consider reporting this to the traffic police especially if you can get the witnesses to testify for you and your friends. Let the police handle this driver. Hopefully after the police has dealt with him, he will not repeat the same kind of reckless driving again.

Cheers

If no harm is done, no point reporting to police. Maybe the person's mother just died, or his wife just screwed some homeless guy, and 99% of the time he is driving normal. It is ok to forgive ppl especially when no damage is done. There are some times when I encoutered something bad, I'll drive at 5000rpm on local roads... However, I don't speed up when I see people on the road.

Well, to be fair, we were at wrong too to cross at that part of the road. So no point reporting him to TP unless we see him more often doing that at the traffic lights. At least we know he picks up his wife/gf there regularly. He is not as bad as the Tibs super-long bus beating the redlight I saw today.

But just feel yucky about his attitude on not slowing down. God knows what happen when he drives further down to Geylang/Aljunied stretch where there is not much traffic light available for crossing? I drive past there a few times and see pretty lot of old folks along the shophouses, people bound to cross there.

Lucky you and your friends are alright.

Just be careful out there. There are some reckless drivers around who do not think about the safety of others.

Keep safe.

Second that brudder. I am in Oregon now. [;)]

For me if there is a fair distance from the popular points (bus stops etc) to the traffic lights people will dash across the road to save some time (at the expense to their life). That is why I was very happy when the LTA started to put up barriers at Serangoon road strecth between potong pasir & macpherson near the two sets of traffic lights. But for some reason or the other the barriers stops right in front of the potong pasir mrt station, so you still get people dashing across theroad at that section even though the mrt is just behind them which they can use to cross the road. There are even escalators so they don't have to climb any stairs. [shakehead]

Down shifting from 5th to 2nd need not brake, thus no brake lights. However if auto trans car, its a different story.

nonetheless still, you don't own the road. If you had seen him earlier, you guys should have double time crossed the road. Jay walking is an offense too you know.

That's why I never deny the fact it was partially our fault. But to run people down?

Engine brake while making entry into a bus stop lane at 90km/h ... any driver can do that I ain't sure? Unless I am that "lucky" to meet a race driver on the road. Don't forget there's car following behind who can prove his speed.

Just hope he doesn't run others down.

[laugh][laugh] you'll be surprised how many corolla drivers think that their car is an F1 machine. [nod][nod] slightly more torquey only and think that they can take on any other car on the road. Loose like then want to jam brakes. [thumbsdown][thumbsdown]
