Of discs and drums

But I must admit, the before-after look of the rims was simply astounding. Didn't realise how much shine was taken off by a mere one week's worth of grime.

Time for Mintex then.. [laugh] Never knew before that a simple change of brake pads could make such a B-I-G difference [angelic]

Here's my insight:

Drums are useful to keep the brake dust out and actually have great stopping power. They lack the cooling of disc setup but have lower production cost (thus the resurfacing of rear drums these days).

Discs/Rotors setup has much better cooling for high speed braking like many bros here mentioned but definitely cost more to produce. So why your Tody has rear discs? "Borrowed" from other VAG group cars mah [:p]

Anyway a tiny disc on the rear is nothing much to look at as well....like the cxxxxxc ones! [:p][laugh][laugh]

Been faced by this debate quite a few times and I'm still curious over the general stand here at MCF on whether drum brakes are inferior to discs in a car.

So, fire away, boys and girls - fact and fiction welcome..... [:)]

For normal saloons like Honda Civic and mini hatches like Perodua Kelisa, rear drum brakes are still acceptable... but when you have a giant heavy weight SUV like the Toyota Fortuner running on rear drum brakes, it's stopping power does creat some serious doubts.

have owned rides with 4-dsics and discs/ drums set up.

personally, i find the all discs set up better. depends on driving style. for late braking, and faster cooling, this set up is ideal.

but there are other components to look at as well. for exanmple, change your hose to steel braided hose for better braking effect.

but to be honest, it's the drive wheels that really need the better brakes so for normal driving, a front wheel drive with front discs set up is more than ample for local driving.

for 4-wheel drive and more powerful cars, an all-discs system would definitely be miuch better.

Is it true that having rear drums your car tend to sqeak as you stop and release your brakes? Or is it due to the the weight of the car? Sometimes it creeps me out cos you never know if they are gonna lose its effectiveness.

Hmm... have heard horror stories where some focus members washed their brakes and after that the brakes wouldn't release after washing. But so far haven't experienced anything like that.
