Been faced by this debate quite a few times and I'm still curious over the general stand here at MCF on whether drum brakes are inferior to discs in a car.

So, fire away, boys and girls - fact and fiction welcome..... [:)]

IMO if you are driving with the standard setup of drum at the rear, and no additional power added or modification done, it doesn't make much different to the driver. You still have enough braking power to stop the car.

For those who rear are disc and the handbrake share the disc for parking as well, I must say that you really have to pull the handbrake hard especially on the slope, because if not the car will slide easily. For those with drum, no problem, just the usual handbrake pull is sufficient. Some car with rear disc have an additional drum like the G9 for the handbrake activation to eradicate the limitations.

Technically, disc/disc definately have better stopping power than disc/drum. Practically speaking the additional stopping power might not be necessary. There are advantages as well as disadvantage for both setup.

For me, if the car does not really need the additional stopping power and warrant the rear for disc, drum is fine with me and I prefer that way if safety is not compromise.

Ahhhh...something we agree on for a change? [:p]

Seems like the germans know how to make good brakes, for the benefit of braking on the autobahn perhaps?? [cool]

Think bec. the speed limit there is higher..... so the brake must be better... as for cars from Japan... the Japanese reckon that S'pore speed limits is only 90km/h... so didn't put much effort in the brakes... i guess!! [laugh]

Usually the cars in the 1.6 class have drums, exceptions are the Corollas and the Toledos [cool]

Better or not, after today, I can honestly attest that discs definitely mean more gunk on the rims - was washing my car and there was this Impreza next to me and the front-rear rims looked like a before-after case study..... [:p]

Even so, the dirt-disparity factor between the front and rear wheels of the Impreza was far greater and more pronounced than mine..... [:p]

But I must admit, the before-after look of the rims was simply astounding. Didn't realise how much shine was taken off by a mere one week's worth of grime.
