Saaber Neutral Newbie August 5, 2003 Share August 5, 2003 Shift Lock - allows you to hold gear longer in that paricular gear Snow - move off in higher gear PWR - if I/m am not wrong is Sport mode where your gear shift will change at higher rpm point than normal mode

E36UDM Neutral Newbie August 5, 2003 Share August 5, 2003 Eg. once you shift locked while your driving at 3rd gear, the auto gear will not upshift to 4th gear till you unlock the shift lock. As for Snow function you will move off think 2nd or 3rd gear instead of 1st, this more for temperate countries. Sports mode - your car will pull away faster as it stays in the gears longer than normal

Aspri Clutched August 9, 2003 Share August 9, 2003 I think the shift lock is for you to shift the car from P to N in case you need to move your car when your car is dead. Usually you have to step on the brake after ignition and shift the gear to D, release hand brake and move off. When engine is dead and you want to tow car, you are in trouble if you don't have shift lock. Depress shift lock, you will realize that you can now move the gear selector from P to N without depressing brake pedals so that your car can get towed away. I think the snow mode may not be moving off in high gear. My boss explained it once to me before as he's UK English and drives a Rover 75 classic which also has that mode. Safe to say, it's definitely for driving in the snow!

Snow - moving off in 2nd gear. This is to prevent wheelspin in slippery road condition, like when it's snowing. No need here unless you happen to stop on a patch of oil.
