Carbon82 Moderator January 12 Share January 12 Went this afternoon with @Freeder @RadX @Spring to check out the China Motor Show, I am not kidding, with BYD taking the center stage and has the largest exhibition area, the rest of the brand literally 靠边站. Many of these Chinese car are better built than traditional ICE brands such as Honda, Toyota, etc. If I am a novice car buyer with a limited budget, the obvious choice are the Chinese EVs. Price vs features and even quality, Honda, Nissan and Toyota totally no fight, I am not joking. A few surprises for me. When I first sat in the Denza D9 with @Spring I lost count of the numbers of wow coming out from our mouths. @$287K nett, I wonder why would someone pay an additional $100+K to get the Alphard / Vellfire. But when we check out the Xpeng X9, the built and features (air suspension, 4 wheel steering and TV for the rear, etc. come standard) is another level (ok I have to minus points for the captain seat in the 2nd row, where the design somewhat hinder the entry / egress). Space in the last row and boot is the best in class. Indicative price is however ~$25K higher than the Denza D9. But knowing PA pricing strategy, final price will be lower if you know how to bargain. EV SUV category, @Presea I think you will like the Zeekr 7X barring the high annual road tax of >$4K. Comparing it side by side with the Xpeng G6, the later look like a plain Jane (but seats are equally comfortable). Overhead a conversation between a visitor and the SE, indicative price basing on current COE is $230+K. I would say Tesla has another serious competitor! Last, one of the model I have wanted to check out is the new Mazda CX-80, cos it is tout as a premium model targeting at BMW, Audi and such. Despite it eye watering launch price of $360+K, the metal on the door is the thinnest I have seen in a modern production car. I am pretty sure if you hit the edge of the door against say a pillar or even the car next to it, the edge is like to bend. Conclusion, this motor show is a mini crystal ball, giving us a glimpse of the automotive scene in Singapore for the next couple of years. Traditional brands, be it bread and butter or premium model, will have a lot to do to play catch up. Me? I shall stick with my T6 for a long while (no direct replacement in sight), waiting for the dust to settle while enjoying the low road tax of <$1.2K for a beast with >310 horsepower. 22

mersaylee Hypersonic January 12 Share January 12 I couldn't tell any models if the badges were removed...macam all were designed by same cookie cutter designer liddat...flat rear floor board, frameless window, flat bottom steering wheel, panoramic moon roof, sloppy roof with same trunk board layout, 2 pc tablet screens, ventilated seat...all these akin to assemble one member from each kpop gal group and i won't be able to tell who from which group...😂 The one that stood out was...drum roll... Sleek, stylish, clean cut with luxury dose on the fit and finish...unlike the battered boba fett...😁 1

To play catchup, the Chinese EV makers are throwing in every hook and sink that traditionally would cost alot more to include, and blatantly copying the much lusted look of the sports car especially Posche to attract the crowds. Just look at a previous posting that shared some previous models that BYD built aka copied, and its latest Sealion 7 that look suspiciously like certain established model despite itsa claim that it was the work of certain established angmo designer. They are trying to give what the consumers lusted, at a much lower price tag with supposedly high tech features. I know many of them are not making money and would close down if China govt decided not to prop them up any more. If many traditional car makers are forced out of business by this strategy, I do not think the industry will survive seeing how innovative the Chinese EV makers are at the moment. Basically except for a few, most of them are good in only copying. And if they are forced to sell at sustainable prices if face with removal of subsidy from China govt, how would they fare? I know this is fair trade as people can choose how to spend their money, but it would be interesting if some rich countries would band together to provide similar subsidy to their traditional car makers. I definitely welcome fair competition, but not this kind of skewed situation. And I do not really want to give my money to copycat car makers unless no choice.

The above 3 china EVs you have posted all are nice and really wow. People paying additional $100+K to get the Alphard / Vellfire is to get the face value with the jap car logo lo. To some people no matter how good Denza is, it is still a china car. Same as still have people still cannot accept korea cars as they see them as cheapo and bad quality cars. Lol. I have one colleague who changed car many years ago, not only die die must buy jap car but also the jap car must be made in Japan, if made in Thailand, he won't buy. Cause not Jap made means quality no good.

Btw does these Chinese EVs have good safety crash test results? Seems this is no longer the usual yardstick that some like to use when buying cars. Some will condemn or write off even if the cars come with only 2 airbags. Nowadays seldom see people comment on this aspect. Evolution at work. To a certain extent, what you said is very AMDK POV. China Govt started pivot towards BEV as early as 2000s. China reckon that BEV is a leapt against reliant on foreign ICE car. A lot of subsidies could be provided to battery makers like CATL and BYD. Before Tesla set up GigaShanghai, good enough MIC BEV is rare. BEV has low barrier of entrance especially setting up in China. Even CATL launched their BEV chassis. China BEV not exactly cheap from OMV POV. BYD Dolphins OMV is $32k. Suzuki Swift OMV is $14k.
