Price is $193,888 but caveat is Insurance + Trade-In (can negotiate). I placed the $1K deposit to reserve a Sealion 7 Atlantis Grey and had looked at all the reviews online. All the reviews were very good e.g. Tesla Model Y killer etc etc. I was soooo excited to go and test drive cos I thought it looked very nice from the front and back ... side view a bit suspect (personal taste).

I went for the test drive (the showroom was packed + SE told me that their leave were cancelled and all had to come in to sell the cars).

Test drive was short (cannot blame them cos lots of requests for test drives) but did not get chance to "push" the car. I had driven the xpengG6 and Model Y in the last 2-3 weeks and ... to be honest, I felt let down by the Sealion 7. I am not sure if it was the hype I was expecting a great car or that I did not have chance to truly test drive the car. I just felt that in terms of tech - xpeng G6 was far superior and its looks was nicer + felt that the Model Y RWD had a little more ooomph in terms of pickup and the interior was uncomplicated ie simple elegance. The Sealion 7 felt a bit sluggish as compared to the other two cars and I felt the interior was confusing. However, I was seriously considering as the price was lowest amongst the 3 EVs then came the sales pitch and huge rushed pressure sales - asked me to confirm cos if I didn't confirm then delivery would be in March, BYD already sold 200+ units, need to pay deposit NOW etc etc.

I really did not like the "pressure sales pitch" - I can understand that they have been asked to sell but this is not the way (btw the SE is someone I bought from another marque before and not a stranger to me). I stopped and said I needed to take another look before walking out of the showroom.

I have just asked for my $1K refund and will now wait for the release of the Juniper.

IMHO ...

I wouldn't say all the reviews are good and there are definitely areas the the sealion comes short e.g. tech isn't quite comparable to model Y (obviously too), the suspension is softer too because it's more comfort based so lean is more obvious. Efficiency isn't as good as the model y is well, also due to the heavier body, which is significantly more.

There are obviously some pluses so one has to consider their priorities. The sealion 7 has more space, has a 10 year battery warranty and servicing up to 200k, which can be quite significant in savings (most have only 8 years batt wty and one to two years free servicing or maybe even non). Byd reliability as a battery manufacturer and also the lower likelihood it will close down compared to some smaller firms. Interior quality is also superior to many conventional cars and soundproofing is also pretty good from most reviews.

I think also have to judge a car at 190+k range with others of the same range too. At that range, there aren't that many worthy competitors (that offer the same, reliability, interior quality, sound insulation etc). It's also shocking they are selling this lower than the seal in category B? I think they are trying to move many units out now.

The pressure tactics you've mentioned aren't unique to byd, and sometimes also dependent on the SE you've met too. Perhaps there are more comms for the SE too and lower basic so they are eager to sell. Byd sells on volumes I think so probably that's the difference in experience with the previous marque?

yeah.. wonder what the OMV is. BYD all out to grab share and push as many units out before the updated Model Y comes around here.

from what i have heard in the industry about BYD, their focus is to make money from their batteries. their car division is to eat up the supply, and as long as dont lose money and can take market share, they chiong.

Adding my view as well as I am looking at model Y and Sealion 😊 Feel free to comment!

G6 - I am not convinced of its exterior look as it looks like the old dated porsche design, too rounded (I know many like it😊). I like Sealion better. I hope the facelift nip and tuck on G6 will help some muscular lines. For a premium EV, it also does not have a glove box and frunk!?! The high centre console seems clattered for me too. And it is a fairly new brand. The G6 good stuff we all know...the auto parking is superb, software is superb etc. No horse run.

Model Y - Sealion is better in terms of NVH than MY but softer suspension. It soaked up Alexandra road bumps outside Hyundai superbly. (caveat: no chance to test in expressway to hear tyre roar). MY exterior looks cleaner which I like. But everything else needs to use my mouth or finger to poke the screen. 🫠 Sometimes after a hard day's work of meetings and presentations, I just don't wanna open my mouth anymore, let alone talking to a machine to adjust something! 😅😆 No cover for moonroof in SG hot sun, no central speedo, no HUD. No 360 real life cam, I know it has the shawdowy thing gudiance but...It has the "young, atas and I am cool" EV branding, the SGeans thing again which should help during resale.

Power - MY may be more powerful than Sealion but I dont see a big difference if one is to drive sanely/normally, not doing a MY vs Sealion drag race. In fact, during Sealion testdrive, I step a bit more to switch lane, my wife told me after that car is too powerful 😆 (she will be main driver if I purchase). I can't speak for G6 as I haven't tested it and do not intend to due to above reasons.

Others - Sealion provides me the small feature which I always look out for in contis - the left mirror tilt down when parking. This small feature always tugs my heart and save my rims. BYD sales guy - the byd sales guy did not push but merely just follow up with me. Good guy.

My Verdict: Sealion does not ace in EVERY item against the other 2 but it ticks all my boxes. The other 2 aced in some items against Sealion but totally lack of in some others.

Just my 2 cents. Do feel free to correct me if I mis-stated anything above cos only testdriving may not have let me know all the features.

Cheers...

BYD owns the entire value chain from mine to ro ro boat for cars.

Seal Premium OMV is $41k.  The margin is about 21%.

My guess Sealion OMV is $45k.  At 194k, the margin could be about 10%

I was told by SE that the omv for sealion is lower than seal hence they can sell at lower price.

Sealion is supposedly based on Seal but has an updated interior design. Now it makes the Seal interior look a tad dated. Wonder if there's a Seal FL coming?

Both should be on the same platform.  It is part of BYD Ocean Series.

The only difference is the motor.

Currently, Seal uses 8-in-1 module.

Sea Lion uses 12-in-1 module.  I forgot about the new module

China has the Seal FL already but not sure if it's coming and when. Btw the Seal FL price in china is lower than pre FL.
