G will say very affordable...buy buy buy...

They say everything is affordable, from cars to flats to even your kopi o. Cos they are thinking from their salaries level, not at the commoners level.

Regardless, it is still important.

Once you create an 'underclass' of dissatisfied masses, that is a recipe for disaster.

What disaster? Vote more opposition? You think any opposition coming in will make COE cheaper and earn less.
Any other party that governs Singapore will Never remove coe. It is myopic to think so. It’s more than $1B income. How to run the country otherwise.

There are about 1.5m households and about 530k private cars in SG.. so my guesstimate is approximately 35% of households got cars..

Oh yeah. Your numbers are correct . Still lah. If you take the intersection of people who are comfortable enough with 50k COE but have to give up driving for 100k COE it is not a lot.

Recently a grassroots volunteer approached me for feedback on local issues. I said COE price is too high. He said "okay, how about housing price? Any concern?". I said "no I already have a place to stay". He said, "Okay, how about CDC vouchers, are they helping you". I said , "it's a good effort but only $300, what?", he said "okay", rolled his eyes and swiftly left.

TLDR - We are not target market to keep happy.

actually though some many not have access directly, they may still have a car to drive around as private hire cars, taxis that they use occasionally for private use.

Its not only the income. Singapore has very high GDP per capita. If everyone who can afford to own a car at its untaxed prices gets to own one, Singapore's roads would be one big parking lot.

Any real increase is going to add to congestion. As an existing car owner I don't want the roads to get any more crowded than it is already, and to give LTA an excuse to raise ERP rates, or worse go to distance-based charging now they have their 3 piece meal IU.

If anything, I want the gap between the can, and the cannots to be wider, so they can perish the thought of owning a car. There are way too many marginal car owners now that can be driving Grab but are hardly making ends meet, or people who are desperately trying to avoid getting their financed cars repossessed.

The problem is there are too many schemes to let these people drive a car thinking they own it when they can far from afford it on their financial means.

But hey, loans and backdoors are easy to find, but that's a noose the finance companies are only too happy to extend to these people

as a driver, I can understand your fears of overcrowding and congestion. There are valid points, and it's natural to want smoother roads and a better driving experience..

but there are a few points I don't quite agree on your post.

first, the idea of 'can' and 'cannots' sounds like something out of the caste system playbook, with a distinct social hierarchy. Does it have to be this way for car access in singapore? That it is only for the privileged?

Many of us are working class folks who started off being your so-called 'cannots', but we do work hard to get there. some shared they have to take loans etc to have a car access early in their lives. Sure, not full cash, but we try to make life better for our families. Admittedly, I have taken loans too though I am thankful at some point as wealth accumulated, that became a lesser concern. Do you think phrases like "perish the thought of owning a car" may seem too harsh, especially from someone who already has one or maybe even a few?

'marginal' owners? 'these people'? Why the need to label someone and project our own prejudices on another? labeling them as such may also overlook the genuine struggles and determination behind their decisions.

If one drives grab, they do work hard to make transport more efficient as they do pick up others in their car most of the time vs someone who drives himself alone, out shopping and back isn't it? Is the former more desirable or the latter when it comes to making our roads less congested? PHV drivers also work hard to earn a keep and to send their loved ones around and I do have respect for them as it's not an easy job driving hours to ferry our loved ones who don't have car access.

Plus, we have to remind ourselves that no one actually owns a car in singapore. we are purely 'entitled' to drive for XX number of years if we can afford the license/certificate. I feel that we shouldn't feel that we should be 'privileged' just because we have more resources.

IMHO, the idea of lesser congestion isn't about having only the rich deserving of cars, but on the usage of road by car users. Distance-based charging is not desirable, but is more equitable as more will be able to gain access to a car during off-peak e.g. bringing their kids to school, or sending the handicapped to the hospitals during off peak, or bringing their loved ones to attractions etc.

There's still some social good beyond our own needs to have a less crowded road.

I dare say that out of these 1.5m households at least 80% aspire to have a car.

And I dare say now, if COE become 60k, the monthly demand will move up by at least 20-30%, lol

Each round, quota only 1.5-2k only (all cat) haven't discount PHV. 20% only need another 240 car buyers, maybe this is low estimate 😂

I think otherwise. Take Tokyo and Hong Kong. These 2 cities are also not low in GDP. Many rich. But no restrictions on ownership or ERP. Only tolls are crossings and highway.
but don’t see any congestion or it becoming a big car park?
why?
I have mentioned about parking spaces before and said that it is all about income. Controlling via parking will make it that not only the govt earns.
