Nowadays with AI, it's very easy to get answers.

Uncle me gib u a tip: when engine is off, don't depress the brake pedal repeatedly. the more you step the stiffer it becums until you have diffficulty starking car.

Maybe there is a vacuum leak in the brake hoses. Before engine starts, a electric vacuum pump rkicks in first to create vacuum. If there is a leak (like what happened to me), the air pressure inside the brake system remains high and brake won't be effective. The safety sensor (to allow engine starting) may be linked to the vacuum status.

Eash to test - switch on the car without starting and see if the brake remains hard to depress (bad) or gets softer after a second or 2 (good).

Not all Cars have Electric Vacuum Pump, only Hybrid or EV have,TS Car should be just Petrol Engine Car,so either the Master Brake Booster[very expensive] gone or just Vacuum Leak.[Cheaper].

Usually after the Engine stop, there should have enough Vacuum for 2 press,if you just the stop the Engine & Brake Pedal become Stiff..then comfirmed Vacuum Leak.

Mine is normal ICE. There's an electric vacuum pump.

My previous car got the same issue, not BMW. 1st 2 years all good, suddenly when engine is off, brake pedal become hard. but once engine is started, back to normal. no issue whatsoever.

bring back to AD check, tell me is like that one all good. so since no issue, drive with it for another 1-2yr and change car. no problem at all.

Long ago my mazda 2 got similar issue, when engine is off, if u step on the brake pedal, sometimes it will become stiff.

Then when engine start, the brake pedal back to normal.

Possibly the brake pedal sensor needs some TLC

Old uncle like me sometimes steps on the brake pedal while exiting the car, and the next day, the pedal is stiff, and needs xtra work by my quads to start the engine.

He said hard for only a short while. Goes soft after a few seconds. Definitely aging.
