And therein lies the issue.

Even when such amounts become “loose change” GST needs to be raised or did the raised GST bring in these loose change?  I dont know

I only know that either ways, to be prudent, one shouldnt fritter.

Let's do a simple calculation. 7% to 9% is 30% increase like you mentioned. Take away 30% from 80 billion, it's still 56 billion. Was there ever a need to raise GST by 30%?

What we are reading in the media are only what MIW feels necessary to share/justify regarding the GST increase.

Bet there are tonnes of other issues that are either too sensitive or will cause great uproar, etc that are being suppressed.

Just that we peasants are not privy to all that.

GST collected for FY2024/2023 is higher by $3b or 19%.

Where got 30%?

The increase of 1% GST increase govt revenue by $2.3b

why gov spend so much money on this? Is there public support for this, if not why is pap doing this if it hurts them???

the gahmen is not stewpig one. its all about numbers.

building the memorial contributes to GDP growth.

the accompanying benefits are tourism, which adds to GDP

the MRT station construction also adds to GDP

with the MRT station, it adds value to the plots of land (ex golf course) that's to be redeveloped. gahmen can sell the land under GLS for a higher price

with more construction following the GLS, more GDP.

what can GDP bring? signals to the world on prosperity and growth, we're doing well, MNCs will cuntinue to invest, spending grows, can tax more, = revenue for the gahmen.

so.. gahmen will have enough bullets to justify one la.

how much is too much? its all relative.

are there better ways to spend the money, or to have a memorial within the museum? definitely yes.

can we ask better questions than "why gov spend so much money on this?", also yes.

after having said so much bird talk liao, what is my take? Ok.. i take 5 first. go ask chatgpt.. BRB

Thank our lucky stars it's a new built memorial and not carving some faces into the Bukit Timah Hill cliff....

PS. And if want to build, it should be called Independence Memorial or Pioneer Gen Memorial.

Yes. The memorial can be aptly incorporated into the National museum.

the cost should be greatly reduced then and more justifiable.

Yup, most of us are shocked by the money spent.  It is really no small amount.

This one looks cheaper and we can build 3 of them at the National Museum or place them somewhere iconic.  😂

They would have called it Lee Kuan Yew memorial if they could. Apparently this memorial was thought up shortly after his death. So no surprises who the memorial really is intended for.

Seems that we have very much gone down the profligate spending and irresponsible, unsustainable plans road, in just 10 years! [laugh]

Ang Mo likes to bask in the sun....

So no problem...

Founders prefer air conditioned indoor space....

I also find the name "Founder" a bit odd. LKY is not the founder of Singapore.

"Pioneer" would probably be more appropriate. And should highlight not just the leaders, but also the population back then who worked hard and sacrificed to make Singapore what it is today.
