Ford just like Mitsubishi has no product suitable for our little market.

Pretty much. And they not willing to bend and break to our regulations too. All our VES, COE restrictions, they can't be bothered to tune and tweak. They rather give up our market and whatever tiny market share they have here.

What Ford is selling in other market?

In SEA, they only got Ranger and Everest.

These 2 models is enough for them.

Our rules kill these 2 models

Exactly.

Ford Ranger is best selling pickup in Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines. Enough for them to make a killing already. What is little Singapore, they don't need us at all.

Reading the posts so far, I still cannot figure it out.

What do people here think they should be paying for a car? The manufacturer price without any taxes and COE? or lower taxes and/or COE? Some multiple of median income?

If yes, how to control congestion? Distance related charges? Or no charges - just sit in traffic jam?

This is just my opinion. Others may disagree.

The car itself should be reasonably priced. Mainstream model (Altis etc) should be around $30-40k. Higher end like E-Class about $100k. Adjust accordingly in between and beyond

However, you impose restrictions in other ways.

- Make it more stringent to take car loan. Property loan has TDSR (total debt servicing ratio) rules, car loan should have the same. This ensures people don't overstretch beyond their financial means.

- If you stay in residence where there is shared parking space (i.e. HDB or condo), make it a requirement to secure a parking lot first before buying car. This can be done by price bidding like how COE works, or simply by ballot. For those in private landed property, you're only allowed as many cars as your porch can fit. Wanna park on the road outside, buy the space like everyone else.

- Parking in office buildings and shopping malls etc, especially in town area, should be much higher. Make it such that people will seriously think hard about whether it's worth it to drive to town, when parking cost can be almost 1% the price of the car.

- Dynamic road pricing. Wanna drive during peak hours on congested road, prepare to pay more. At the same time, if you only weekend warrior or drive mostly late night to ulu places like Tuas, you shouldn't be penalised too heavily as you're not really contributing to congestion. This is what ERP 2.0 is supposed to achieve.

The primary cost for car should be on usage, not so much upfront ownership payment. Make it hard for people to use the car, but don't make it impossible to own a car.

Thanks for sharing.

So in short, the apparent unhappiness and schadenfreude about burning cars etc. should reduce if people find it easier to join the car owners club even if this means they drive it less or not at all due to cost imposed on parking/mileage or whatever congestion control measures.

The bidding for car park will become like COE. In the end, still high upfront cost, not usage. ERP 2.0 is the way to go if based on usage.

When supply doesn’t meet demand we will create a divide

Those on a budget will want car affordability first and worry about mileage later

those with means will want more road space even if everything costs more

and plenty in between plus those who fall behind

think about crowded roads Ala most of Asia or costly ownership 🤔
