Maybe the next "cambodian / turk / vanuatu / cypriot" money launderer will plough the money into this kind of high-priced phones instead of sports cars and rolexes and bear bricks [laugh]

For tactical reason lah.

Bring a tablet to toilet and wife will ask what he is doing.

Bring phone (which can be hidden in pocket), wife cannot see, and later in toilet, the phone transform into a mini theater, song dah. Hahahaha

No one even bothered to set up a thread for iphone 16. Or say they can't wait to upgrade their phones.

Apple’s iPhone 16 faces challenge from Huawei’s $3,650 tri-fold phone

BEIJING – Apple’s new iPhone 16 failed to excite investors with long-expected AI features still in test mode even as an industry-first tri-fold phone from Huawei raised the stakes in a battle to dominate the global smartphone market.

Apple’s shares fell 1 per cent in pre-market trading on Sept 10, a day after the US tech giant unveiled its new iPhones that sport hardware-level integration for applications based on artificial intelligence but with limited changes to the external design.

The phones will use AI features dubbed Apple Intelligence to improve the company’s voice assistant Siri, as well as enhance the camera.

These AI features will arrive on iPhones in beta in October. The company did not say when it would move beyond that.

“With lots of words like ‘later this year’ and ‘early next year’, the core Apple message for iPhone 16 was: Next year will be better,” Needham analyst Laura Martin said in a note.

On Sept 10, Huawei showed off its new Mate XT, which users can fold three ways. The device has already received more than four million pre-orders, for which no deposit is required, according to the company’s website.

It boasts an AI assistant with text summary, translation and editing functions, as well as AI-boosted image-editing functions such as trimming unwanted parts of photos.

But with a price tag that starts at US$2,800 (S$3,650) – more than twice the starting price of the comparable iPhone 16 Pro Max – and limited production, the tri-fold phone is likely to become more of a symbol of Huawei’s tech prowess than a major sales driver, analysts said.

“Production constraints and the high price point mean the new phone will likely not have a huge impact in terms of shipments,” said Mr Will Wong, a senior researcher at consultancy IDC.

“But it’s telling the consumers that it’s still the tech leader and the potential challenge it brings to Apple may be far beyond just market share.”

I was expecting a real epoch-making product.  At $3-4k for base model, it seems way too expensive for a tri fold phone.  Maybe it is technically very difficult to make but the value for money proposition, can't really see it yet.

Agree that the price is out of the world for normal mobile phone user / buyer, probably to cover the R&D cost. The first (or was it second) foldable phone from Huawei used to be selling at >$3K too despite the lack of Google OS but they still survived and have garner enough funds for further breakthrough technology and product (Tri fold phone).

Btw, looking at the unboxing video, the set come with quite a few things such as TWS ear bud, leather case, car charger / adaptor, more than 1 cable, etc. Just short of a kitchen sink (maybe the watch?) hahahaha

What kind of protective casing? 🤔

At the 4:10 mark, the casing is shown, which protect the side with exposed folding screen. I just wonder why don't they also include the protection for the other side (metal hinge)?

The kickstand on the case can also be rotated to allow the phone to stand in portrait or landscape model.

To put into perspective, in China 2 sets of this phone is enough to buy a entry level car. Its target audience is definitely not the general consumers there.

Pretty sure it will sell enough to cover cost.  1.4b people and top 1% is 14m people.  Surely they got money to burn and to show off.

New technology breakthrough is making up lost ground for not having access to Google. Huawei jiayou jiayou!

It’s official: Huawei Mate XT Ultimate will make its way outside of China after all

Source: https://www.gsmarena.com/its_official_huawei_mate_xt_ultimate_will_make_its_way_outside_of_china_after_all-news-64632.php

Huawei shipped the first units of its first tri-fold Mate XT Ultimate earlier today in China and if you were left wondering whether the device would ever make its way outside of its home market then we have some good news! We can now confirm the Mate XT Ultimate will launch globally in Q1 2025.

With a starting price of CNY 19,999 ($2,800/€2,550) in China, Mate XT is already one of the most expensive bits of tech you can purchase, and when we factor in the price fluctuations between China and the rest of the world, that cost could balloon to well over $3,000/€3,000 for international buyers.

That’s the type of cost associated with first-gen tech and we have to give props to Huawei for what they achieved in terms of hardware here. We recently got the chance to handle a Mate XT Ultimate and were more than impressed with its build and all of the potential that tri-folds bring to the table.
