South Korea holds emergency meeting as EV fires stir consumer fear

20240809050609_0.jpg

SEOUL, Aug 12 (Reuters) - South Korean officials met on Monday to discuss electric vehicle safety and whether to require car firms to disclose battery brands amid growing consumer concern after an EV blaze in an underground garage extensively damaged an apartment block.

The fire on Aug. 1, which appeared to start spontaneously in a Mercedes-Benz EV parked below a residential building, took eight hours to put out, destroying or damaging about 140 cars and forcing some residents to move to shelters.

The country's vice environment minister is leading the meeting, which is also being attended by the transport and industry ministries and the national fire agency, an official said, with the government due to announce new rules soon.

On Tuesday, transport ministry officials will hold talks with automakers, including Hyundai Motor Group, Mercedes-Benz Korea and Volkswagen Group Korea, to discuss the proposal to disclose battery brands used in EVs, media reports said.

Few days after, KIA EV6 Electric Car Fire in Geumsan Parking Garage Put Out Before Causing Major Damage.
https://www.rokdrop.net/2024/08/08/electric-car-fire-in-geumsan-parking-garage-put-out-before-causing-major-damage/

Some emergency crews also seen not in full firefighting PPE and only wearing N95 masks, that will not protect you from the battery toxic smoke.

Be careful when park beside an EV.
No idea what will LTA do on laws for EV parking in housing estate that have basement, shopping mall basement carpark and hospital carpark. These are area to be of a concern if 1 of them burst into flame.

Can ask China how to extinguish EV fire effectively and efficiently or not, since they strives to be No. 1 EV mfg country and their BYD is top-selling No. 1 EV here? 🙂

It was in the news a while back that they are opening a public tender for proposals to mitigate EV fires at bus interchanges.

EV battery for a bus must be huge, probably with at least 200 kWh capacity. That's 3-4 times that of an EV passenger car. If catch fire sure jialat.

LTA should wake up their idea! Take this S.KOREA EV fire case a one of the case study and lesson learnt to prevent such incidents from happening here. Take a preventive action rather than waiting for it to happen then take corrective action, by then is too late. Why wait when things can be improve and even prevent in the first place. 交通部应该主动,而不是被动。

LTA too "busy" with high COE prices 😆

Maybe a new depot for charging. but then the fires in Korea all happen without charging. So buses parked at interchange can also easily catch fire.
so for LTA to act it has to be some one in govt kenna big time and then LTA too Kan…

that’s why I said if the underground carpark at Parliament House BBQ LE…. then will be huge action….. else…. LTA act blur and taichee

EV must be parked at designed parking lots. When fire & temperature sensor detect abnormality, the floor will open to a filled water tank below and your entire EV will be dropped into the filled water tank below the lot. 🤣

LTA won't give a damn and will throw the hot potato to SCDF. Why? Because LTA is profit centre, SCDF is cost centre :D

The question I want to ask ah Wong in parl ia ment is do we need Electric vehicles?

like we need chewing gum?

its only money.

we cannot afford bombs everywhere.

you stroke also?

freeze all evs until safety ISO.

You know safety time out. It’s energy concern yes, but no need tip of the spear in burning.

You know erection short circuit?

and get those overpaid ppl at nus

/ ntu to show use.

and it’s Mercedes Benz, a respected and reputable marque. If they can c8 it up, everybody also can.
