The other competitors weren't even expecting to get anything beyond the bronze.

After possibly winning dirty for decades, I think china is trying to win clean because the need to prove themselves is less intense, while the whole system is better at supporting the athletes now with professional all rounded team

Russia is still at the 80s and 90s stage where their system has not progressed, hence the need to continue systematic doping to give Putin some pride unfortunately.

US continues to have their share of dopers, and many of their track n field stars passed on at young age, and drugs were likely contributory

fact is that the olympic athletes have more in common with each other in their respective fields than their countrymen commenting on internet or media.

I mean u eat/sleep/train and do the same damn crap over and over again. More common bonds together than with the regular joe in the streets.
