Electric car makers BYD and Tesla have both launched more affordable models that qualify for the slightly less expensive Category A COE in the past couple of weeks.

The newer of the two is the Seal Dynamic 100kW from BYD. As its name suggests, it has a power output of 100kW or 134hp. Performance suffers compared to the outgoing Dynamic model, but this new version will still get from 0-100km/h in 10 seconds. Crucially, it still has a 61.44kWh battery. The claimed range on the WLTP Combined cycle is 460km.

byd-seal-a1.jpg

Inside, the new Seal Dynamic 100kW loses none of the features that make the Seal such a tantalising option in its class. You have a large 15.6-inch infotainment system, ventilated seats, an expansive panoramic sunroof, and a comprehensive suite of safety features.

From Tesla, we have the Rear-Wheel Drive 110 variant of the Model 3. The number “110” refers to its power output, 110kW or 148hp – the maximum permissible to qualify for a Category A COE.

It may be the least powerful version of the Model 3, but it’ll still get from a standstill to 100km/h in a sprightly 8.6 seconds. The claimed WLTP range is 513km.

tesla-model3-cat-a.jpg

The Rear-Wheel Drive 110 variant loses none of the features that make the Model 3 great, and that means it has a large 15.4-inch infotainment display, Tesla Arcade, Sentry Mode, and more.

Having a car that qualifies for a Category A COE is an important strategy for carmakers here in Singapore. Although the prices of Category A COEs remain high, car buyers (particularly first-time buyers) will appreciate every little bit of savings that they can get.

In the case of these two cars here, and based on current COE premiums, the savings (when compared to the Cat B model) can range anywhere from S$10,000 to as much as S$25,000.

To learn more about these cars, be sure to check out our earlier review of the BYD Seal Performance and our test drive of the new updated Model 3.

Availability and pricing

The BYD Seal Dynamic 100kW and Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive 110 are both available to order now.

Prices of the BYD Seal Dynamic 100kW start at S$170,888, while prices of the Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive 110 start at around S$189,000.

Prices are correct at the time of publishing and are subject to change because of ever-changing COE premiums.

The Base Tesla Model 3 Has Just 148 HP In Singapore

Tesla may say it doesn't sell slow cars, but that's not true if you live in a country where cars are taxed based on their power rating. Digging through a recent firmware update, Tesla code connoisseur “green the only” found mentions of a “soft performance limit” and power levels of 110 kilowatts (148 horsepower) for the Model 3 and 159 kW (213 hp) for the Model Y.

The only country where Tesla sells a 110-kW Model 3 is Singapore. Before owning a vehicle, you first have to bid for a certificate of entitlement (or COE for short) and obtain one for around $70,000. There are two types of COE: category A, which entitles you to own a vehicle with no more than 110 kW, and category B, which applies to any passenger vehicle that exceeds that.

The 110 kW Model 3 is the slowest accelerating Tesla available anywhere, with a claimed acceleration time from 0 to 62 mph of 8.6 seconds. Interestingly, the regular Model 3 RWD, with around 283 hp and a sprint time to 62 mph of 6.1 seconds, is just 500 Singaporean dollars (about $371) less than the variant with reduced power—the biggest savings come from obtaining the cheaper COE.

Both power limits are achieved through software, so there is no physical difference between the limited and higher-power regular models. In theory, they could have their power limit removed, although this would have obvious legal implications.

But what do you want to do with so much accelerating power in SG, one may ask?

Being a tiny island, last time Dr M said if drive ferrari also can only go up to 2nd gear then you reach the other end of the island already [laugh]

And so many traffic lights and dedicated right turn arrow signals, in any case.

Cat A is like diesel pickup truck.  There is torque but no hp.

From 0km/h, it is no issue.

The issue is overtaking in expressway.

Anyway, you will not understand.

Will Tesla and BYD "accidentally" firmware update these castrated cars with normal firmware and restore the HP?

Imaging they have to waste resources to develop a separate firmware for each update from the one that the rest of the world use. Doesn't make sense right? And Vicom can't check HP nor software.

Model 3 Performance road tax is $3k more but some selling annual depre $2-3k less than Standard range so works out around the same which makes a used Performance a better buy
