Actually 1.6L 5 series has been around since F10, but available only in Turkey and Greece. 

F10 520i uses N20, with 170 horsepower and 250 Nm torque 

G30 520i uses B48, with 170 horsepower and 250 Nm torque

The problem with BMW and alot of conti brands is they try to innovate  too much. What look nice and work dun necessary need to change or redesign.
