I remember my flight to Brisbane, red-eye also, a girl lie down across the 3 seats in the middle as it was quite an empty flight.

Another trip to US, got a Vietnamese auntie lie down on the aisle in the middle of the night beside me. The ang moh cabin crew really screw her upside down. Lol. Crazy people.

I am always belted up, loosely, and even over the blanket when laying down. If lucky enough to get across three seats, then still will belt the middle one.

The bigger risk is walking to/from the toilet. When in the toilet, I am always seated in case of shaking, and can hold the handle and door etc. My thought is usually about "hope I don't get wet; these are the only jeans I have for the week." 🥲

My mother, once, lay on a blanket in the space between the last row of seats and bulkhead. She is really small and there is literally nowhere to go; up, down, backward, forward or sideways - really safe. I doubt even crew saw that she was there.

That said, the section over Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, is always bumpy and often the whole section no matter the time of year. Sometimes like hell and the problem is that is where meal service starts before landing, or not yet finished on the way to Europe.

Any pilots can comment, how far ahead can the doppler radar detect air turbulence or microburst? In this case, was it just not enough time to warn the passengers?

I'm not pilot but understand aviation stuff. The weather radar on planes can detect clouds during flight, the radar uses microwave frequency to detect cloud formation.

The waves bounces onto water droplets of clouds and bounce back to the radar to provide the relative distance away. Then pilots will decide actions to take depending on type of clouds approaching the flight path.

As CAT is known as Clear Air Turbulence, there is no cloud formation for radar to bounce off, meant it's undetectable by radar during flight.

Let's see when in car seat belt 100% on.

So why flying no need?

Same principle! They both always crash right?

Most people that got injured Superman straight into the air

and hit their head on the roof and dented the above luggage bins.

"Everyone seated and not wearing seatbelt was launched immediately into the ceiling, some people hit their heads on the baggage cabins overhead and dented it, they hit the places where lights and masks are and broke straight through it."

So must learn from another road user!

Sure you look stupid wearing a helmet on a plane

but better than dying right or hitting your head so hard

smashed all the overhead bins.

Pilot aways check weather report before the plane takes off right?

Then air traffic control also always given them updates during the flight?

How come pilot did not know?

F1 drivers helmet

Yeah like the Stig!

You will never hear him complain about a bit of turbulence

or being burn in a crashed plane on fire.

He uses a Nomex suit and as all F1 drivers do only use 100% cotton underwear and never nylons

as Nylon will just must melt and fuse into the groin!

Weather meant cloud formation mah...

CAT meant no clouds so both pilot and ATC has not info.

Wind shear also cannot be detected and is really dangerous during landing.

I am no expert but I think could have been avoided.

Every time I fly the pilot always announces belt up before the turbulence start.

And its always at the same time on every flight.

After they serve the meal and just about to serve the coffee or tea.

The wings of the plane will rock up and down and pilot say belt up

the stewardess will give a huge big smile and say sorry no hot beverage.

This is always just after the first class get served their hot drinks

and me and the others in cattle class miss out!

:D

I no expert but how come at the same point at every flight?

I suspect the pilot rocked the wings on purpose

because after landed the stewardess will NEVER say to the pilot lying in bed

"I am too tired dear I was on my feet all the time serving everyone tea and coffee

and that batty old lady sitting next to the nice massage therapist

every 5 mins press the button and ask for something! So cannot do tonight"

Cannot do what I don't know please don't ask me I no aviation expert.

i just came back from perth earlier on  SQ 214 and saw this news while mid flight using wifi.😨

Was worried when heading to and from toilet, once in my seat faster fasten the seatbelt.

Normally always belted in unless heading to the loo, even in the loo will try and hold the handle cos scared of sudden turbulence.

Next time go plane toilet adapt this pose.
