I think the father has very poor risk assessment. Pride cometh before the fall. A road cyclist or a motorcyclist must do it and be willing to die. All it takes momentary giddiness and disorientation and your head can be a watermelon on the road like this boy. Even a high speed collision with your neck being snapped back is enough to paralyze you. Anyone who doesn't believe it is just 自欺欺人。 Adult surely can take the risk. But don't ask your kid to take the risk. A vehicle may have faulty brakes. The driver may fall asleep. He may have instinctive reaction to swerve to avoid another accident. Similarly, a lot of PRC cyclists don't know how to react to car coming so close. Once I was overtaken by car when i was rolling downhill at 55km/h in Beijing. The person pulling in front should be riding on a straight line and making sure that rider behind can follow. The person behind the boy should tell the leadout rider to slow down.
