The welfare system came on in USA after great depression. Provide work etc.

In Europe, it started after post WW2 austerity after physical destruction of the cities and economy.

Welfare must follow after a shock beyond normal.

And what caused the great depression, shock beyond normal?

Classical economy theory that say the economy is automatically self correcting,

the invisible hand of capitalism and supply and demand will automatically solve all the problems.

The worse that could happen is gov that interfere and screw up the system by Provide work etc. and the welfare system.

Now when people talk about Asian societies and western society

you have to ask who is being simplistic?

Asian countries are all so different, western countries are all also so different.

Indonesian society and Japanese society is so different.

Taiwan and China society are so different.

We tend to lump western society as the same.

This is stereo typing and is simplistic.

Sweden and US are so different.

So is SG an Asian society that is still more communalism in nature or are we individuals striving for individualism?

I am not asking to argue with you hor, I don't have time to waste like that.

I am genuinely interested in what you have to say.

Because SG is a bit hard to classify, we are in Asia and we are Asian and yet our society is also people  striving for individualism.

I am me, I am different, I have my own thinking and values etc etc

Anyone in SG says we must be communalism in nature, if everyone in my company or family or friends think like that I also must subdue my own thinking and  for the individualism "the greater good."

We are a hybrid like most modern Asian societies in 21st century.

But we accept moral values that would normally be taught in religion in the west.

If you go into how most Asians are brought up, an Indonesian vs an Indian vs a Korean for example, lot of the families share lot of similarities.

For example, Elders have authority. Even those not of your family.

We Harbour with our families for far longer than Americans or even Europeans. Move out when you have your bto. Of all my friends, I've only known one who moved out before marriage before 30.

In the states, it's common to be thrown out of the house at age 18. Or you start paying your parents rent. Or you are expected to move out for college. This is supposed to breed rugged individualism and a key rite of passage for Americans.

Call your in laws by their first names? Not sure if you called your MIL by her maiden name.

Our academics toe the line here. Red lines in the sand? We follow.

Land of the free baby! Land of the free.

Its not a place for common sense. It's a place for magic mushrooms!

Ultimately, western society is based on collective individualism. And America is the extreme.

Asian societies still more communalism in nature. We accept many restrictions and rules for the greater good. Guess that's why asians striving for individualism also tend to move there.

Singapore Lang love rules and regulations.

Yes yes yes Singapore Lang love rules and regulations.

They love to break them!

I see the reckless drivers thread,

run red light, turn on go straight lanes, go straight on only turning lanes . . .

Singapore Lang do not love rules and regulations.

We have rules and regulations because they are so badly behave we need rules and regulations to keep them in check.

If everyone flushed the toilet no need for poor civil servants to waste time making rules on flushing the toilet.

We have so many rules and regulations because people cannot control and behave themselves.

The funny thing is the people that shit the toilet and don't flush

when they need to use and see a dirty toilet someone else that shit the toilet and didn't flush

they go OMG and use the clean toilet next door.

People don't know how to think huh?

They don't want to use a toilet full of shit but won't flush their own shit down!

Really don't know how to think one!

Why is Japanese toilets so clean?

We all Asians right?

We should all be the same!

But we are all not the same.

Asian countries all so different.

I love going Japan and Korea and Thailand and Vietnam.

All the other countries not so much.

Food also so different.

Just as we Asians are all different, western countries also so different.

I don't want to go to France or Spain and get picked pocketed or mugged.

But its safer in Denmark and Finland right?

Has anyone got picked pocketed or mugged in Denmark and Finland?

President George H. W. Bush gave us Savings and Loans crises.

USA called Bill Clinton to rescue the US economy.

The early 1990s recession describes the period of economic downturn affecting much of the Western world in the early 1990s. The impacts of the recession contributed in part to the 1992 U.S. presidential election victory of Bill Clinton over incumbent president George H. W. Bush.

Tribalism?

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3d9dd8v75no

Taylor Swift has just endorsed Kamala Harris – but it’s not just her vote Harris is after, it’s her millions of fans

.......With more than 3,500 volunteers, the Swifties for Kamala would seem like an experienced political operation. The group has even raised over $165,000 (£126,000) for the campaign since they began tracking donations from 1 August.

...But Ms Kim, who says she has never participated in political campaigning like this before, thinks everyone came together in a really “natural” way. They’re using the skills she says they’ve developed - from strategising how to buy tickets for the sold-out Eras tour and auctioning off merchandise like signed Taylor Swift records - to try and swing an election.

......The army of Swifties could also be a way for the Harris campaign to go head-to-head with Donald Trump’s already very active base of supporters online. They operate a bit like a fandom too, and have proved effective at pushing out endless memes and pictures for the former president. Endorsements from - for example - tech boss Elon Musk have also sent Musk’s devoted army of followers on X Trump’s way too.

Reds screw up, Blues to the rescue!

:D

If Reagan and Big Bush didn't screw up the US economy there would be no President Bill Clinton.

If Small Bush "W" didn't screw up the US economy there would be no President Obama.

If my BFF Trump didn't screw up the US economy there would be no President Biden.
