TOKYO: A Japan Airlines plane is in flames on the runway of Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Tuesday (Jan 2) after a possible collision with a Coast Guard aircraft.

Live footage on public broadcaster NHK showed the aircraft erupting in flames as it skidded down the tarmac and fire crew members feverishly tried to extinguish the fire.

Japan Airlines said that all 379 passengers and crew had been evacuated.

The flight, JL516, had departed from Sapporo's New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido. It landed at Haneda at 5.47pm, according to data from flight-tracker Flightradar24.

The Coast Guard said it was investigating the possibility that one of its aircraft collided with the passenger jet.

Looks like the Passenger A/C left engine hit something on R/W then burst into flame....

Only has a guy dousing the fire, then the trucks came so late..... by then whole fuselage burnt up already.

Quoted from BBC.

"Japan's coastguard says its aircraft - which is thought to have collided with the passenger jet - was on its way to Niigata Airport to deliver aid to the earthquake-hit Noto peninsula, according to the news agency Reuters.

We're also following the latest on the earthquake, which has so far killed 48 people, in our live coverage here."

Either wrong instruction from ATC or the coast guard plane exceeded the taxy way holding line and intruded into runway or coast guard pilot didn't know where is the holding line.

Yup, Likely not familiar with the airport.

Usually airbases runways and taxy ways less complex than commercial airport.

Dunno which runway was the a/c landing on. But 3 runways with a 4th one built can be quite confusing.
