you are missing the joy of driving....

the clutch, manual gear changes...and the sound of the engine vroom....waahhh...music to some pple ears...that's actually the fun part! the joy of driving a car and controlling the clutch and gears...

guess all these will be gone....and in the next decade or two...yr kids will ask what is a manual car!!

There is no joy in driving on Sg roads. Hoggers/Tailgaters/commercial vehicles/PHVs/Taxi uncles looking for free vacation etc.

Just a car that gets me from A to B as quickly/cheaply(overall)/comfortably will do.

I took a ride on one on the way to the airport once, and chatted with the taxi uncle. He told me the range of the green MGs is not great.

I think he said real world range 200+km only, so it cannot last the distance covered by a typical taxi driver in a day, and will have to take time out to charge mid-day. So he claims that it isn't so popular because of that. But he also said the daily rental was supposedly lowered, to accommodate some of such drawbacks from these early EV taxis models.

Too bad, i like the ride though, still smooth and quiet, even though I saw it had 200k+ mileage on the odometer. No creaks and rattles. And IMO, the station wagon body style has much better luggage space for airport runs than the typical Prius and Ioniq hybrid taxis, that can barely fit a couple of mid-sized luggages.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Yeah wagons are more practical for airport runs. The range is the killer really. Nobody can tahan 200km range if they have to drive that car for a living.

And for those using the taxi 24 hours via dual shift, who is going to sacrifice their shift time to charge the EV? The drivers will push to each other :D

Most of those EV model use by taxi company has too small battery size.. typically less than 60kwh.

Like Hyundai Kona EV also too small battery size. Standard range battery only 48.5kwh.

I think the fleet purchasers could have benefitted from market research and bringing in a few to test first. Real world challenges.

Eg, not sure how common night shift drivers are for taxis these days, but if there is, pass over to 2nd shift with empty battery? So either got to end shift early to charge, or the 2nd driver spend an hr charging first.

But if battery big enough, and solo driver, can just AC charge during breaks and at night.

Real joy is driving in rural Malaysia without a**holes to bother you. I had a wonderful time driving from KL to Bentong via the old route (not Karak Highway). It was fun, even if the roads are destroyed by heavy vehicles running around for the ECRL project.

Less a**holes, mood also better, more forgiving and more graceful towards others on the same road. :D

Yeah. I do that when overseas. In a rental car. Usually I will spend a bit more to rent a better/bigger one.

Yes, B road is more fun (except those super winding road that might cause car sickness to passenger) than those straight long highway.

9 mins charge is coming.

Sooner or later.

Mention before EV is in its infant stages.

When EV reach adult stage. We are going to see battery that won't burn and go like 2000km.

Now I saw byd offer their van. 600k warranty or 10 years for battery already.

Even my lorry I renew 20 years also cannot hit 600k mileage.

A real life case I encounter. EV van. Use for a year. Battery cannot charge to full 100 percent. Went back AD. AD says it’s normal after one year usage. So range drops as compared when new after a year. LL suck it up just continue use.
EV van range distance already not great as compared to car now even shorter.
Thou pick up fast but top speed low just for info thou van speed limit is only 70, but their top speed only 100 to 120 mph, just for knowledge sake ya.
So all, always good to clarify how the warranty works out before purchase in order to be better informed.
Also, will electric motor konked out? If so, then what’s next? Repair or go shop buy new one again? We got coe, cannot step into shop, point finger, pay via NETS then drive out with temporary paperwork one leh?
What works in other countries don’t work for us. 🙂

Now that their whereabouts leaked, they may have to start moving them elsewhere. Imagine the number of open cat they consumed. 😁

Not sure how keen taxi companies are, with this technology. I remember the MG green electric taxis launched to much fanfare few years ago. Nowadays like hardly see them around?

Just saw 2 this afternoon

Ya man. One was following behind me on the expressway. Decided to give way even. Even though he kept his distance. I know that company damn smelly when it comes to claims. So avoid trouble is better.

Battery longevity/ minimal degradation have been proven by Tesla and 2 recent studies in the UK and Germany.

Yup, range will increase but i don't see 2000 km, if we were to reach that type of energy density, EV manufacturers will cut batteries to reduce weight, increase range and reduce cost.

BYD Atto 3 and E6's top speed listed in brochure is only 140kph :D

Taxis don't take up COE quota, they only pay PQP to register new taxis.

Then BYD will be sanctioned soon for threatening national security....

Such nonsense are expected without fail. But why China never raise concerns with Tesla collecting data leh? Huawei, backdoor access, I laughed

Some countries are just very small gas, cannot see others be better than themselves.

Concerns raised over potential data leak to China via BYD cars in Korea (https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/tech/2025/02/129_391960.html)

With the recent entry by China's BYD into Korea's passenger electric vehicle (EV) market, concerns have been raised over potential personal data leaks to China through the vehicles manufactured by the company, industry observers said Tuesday.

The security risks of private data leaks to China emerged following BYD's official entry into the Korean passenger vehicle market last month.

BYD's first model launched here, the Atto 3, is equipped with connected car features, such as over-the-air (OTA) software update capability and navigation features, through which sensitive driver data could be transferred to China, according to the market watchers.

"BYD must disclose exactly what types of data are collected and how they are processed," said Yom Heung-yeol, professor emeritus of cybersecurity at Soonchunhyang University.

He stressed that an "opt-out mechanism," allowing consumers to reject the collection of personal data if they choose, was necessary.

BYD Korea has addressed data protection concerns, stating, "We fully understand Korean customers' concerns regarding personal data security and strictly comply with the Personal Information Protection Act."

It said that data collected in Korea is managed locally and not shared with BYD headquarters in China.

The company has also stated that it has no plans to integrate DeepSeek, China's generative artificial intelligence (AI) service, into its vehicles.

Chinese EV manufacturer Geely recently announced a plan to incorporate DeepSeek's AI model into its vehicles.

The recent launch of DeepSeek has raised concerns over potential data leaks globally, having prompted Korean government agencies and private companies to ban the use of its service at work.

Despite BYD's assurances, concerns persist regarding the storage of Korean user data on Tencent Cloud servers, which belong to a Chinese IT company.

Although managed within Korea, the storage of Korean user data on a China-affiliated server has sparked unease among experts.

Lim Jong-in, professor emeritus at Korea University's graduate school of information security, said the government must conduct rigorous inspections of BYD vehicles not only in terms of performance but also from a cybersecurity standpoint.

"Like Huawei in the past, there is a possibility of backdoor access vulnerabilities that allow third parties to bypass security protections and access data," Lim said. (Yonhap)
