Charging phone in car and impact on car battery

IMHO.

Fast charging for mobile phone based on 25W would be about 2A 12V.
A typical alternator would probably produce more than 60A.  Therefore, the impact would be about 3.33 %.
If the engine is running, it shouldn't have significant impact.

P.S.
Other systems in the car that may have more impact than mobile charging
-  typical car stereo from 20-100W
-  headlights from 55W.

It's more of an adverse impact to the mobile phone, by keeping it perpetually draining and charging at the same time. Both battery usage and battery charging generate heat and there'll be a cumulative effect. I notice the elderly like to do this, keep the phone charging on a cable while playing facebook or youtube video with speaker volume switched on. No surprise the battery end up bloated quite fast.

IMHO.
Some phones like Samsung,  can limit the charging to 85% to protect the battery e.g  charge to 85% and then internally disable the charging.  When drop to around 83%,  enable charging again.

My phone is usually limited to 80% charge. Don't think it prolong the lifespan though....

So for EVs it has the same concept somewhat and the 12V onboard works in the same way I guess

IMHO.
12V battery in EV should be lesser of an issue because there is no engine heat which is detrimental to the battery.

As the title suggests, I have never charged my phone in the car. However it looks to be a more plausible option .

Loads of info and most suggest it’s ok using the ciggy plug adaptors, wireless pads OR the usb/usb-C sockets provided .

Any long term effects on the car battery ?

Discuss

If any effect on it, change car lah. Haha :XD:

Depends on the design of the phone.  Even Samsung phones with 85% battery protection have 2 variations a)  85%, stop charging,  drop to about 83% starts the charging again and b)  85% stops charging,  continue to draw power from the charging base on demand.

P.S.
I have Samsung which is of the (b) variant where I would charge in the vehicle 3 times a day.  It is slightly more than 4.3 years now and the phone is telling me it can last > 1 day.  🤣
The vehicle 12V cigarette port supports mobile charging,  TPMS and camera.     Over 9 years,  12V battery change is maybe 3 times IIRC.

This is good, didn't know that. Makes sense as that is the storage level charge of a lithium based battery.

sometimes know too much or read too much will result in thinking too much.

i just plug in my phone to charge when i need to use my wired carplay.

both phone and car die cannot call for help but at least car die phone alive can call for tow truck 🤣

There is an external device for mobiles or tablets that do not have this feature.

I still maintain that everyone is concerned about the phone battery for nothing.
charge 80% or 100% will still die. Li-on batts are also not made to such high quality these days. We are a throw away society. If things don’t spoil how to squeeze more money from the consumer. All ones needs to do is not be to be much better or worse than the competitor.
have been in the electronics industry for years. Seen all sort of products. Consumer mass market is where you squeeze every drop to make money.

so just use and charge. Batteries got no real reason why they ultimately fail. They can say charge too much, never use proper charger, too much wireless charging etc, are you going to do a chemical and break down analysis to figure out why. In the it’s quite similar to why some smokers can live to 100years old whereas others die early due to throat cancer.
Why make life so difficult for yourself.
I have learnt not to bother about such! 🤣

Charging phone has negligible effect on car starter battery.

The worst effect is when starting car engine COLD. It pulls a lot of current (typically over 100A) from the battery. It's less when the engine is hot, in operational condition.

That's why the industry came up with this Enhanced flooded lead-acid battery (EFB) for start/stop engine. The lead plates are thicker in size to handle frequent starting of engine.
