Rather it is human nature of complacency.

This is especially when you are holding to something.

Most escalator incidents down to improper use; top causes include people looking at phones: BCA

Another 16 per cent were due to users moving on an escalator or not holding the handrail. About 12 per cent were attributed to the physical health conditions of the user who, for instance, might be feeling dizzy or unwell while using the escalator.

Millions of people use escalators around the world every day boh tai chi!

Millions of people everyday drive on roads around the world boh tai chi.
