Giving an update on the rattling problem . The intermittent rattling problem when decelerating becoming more frequent 1 year after the engine overhaul, there is also a whining noise when the rpm raise above 2k rpm. I sent back the car to the workshop, a mechanic from China tested drive with me, upon hearing the first rattle, almost immediately he pointed out balance shaft to be  the cause. I told him to test drive for another while but he was very confident that the whining and rattling are both caused by the bad balance shaft. I left the car there for 3 days for them to replace the balance shaft, the rattling and whining noise were really gone after the repalcement.  The only catch is that the balance shaft was a “recon” one becuase new  one will take weeks to arrive. Anyway my car is 15+year old, I will use it untile IF the noise comes back again before replacing it with a NEW one, which I am told , total cost of about 5k to 6k. Meantime, happy with the repair.

Kudos to this mech. China mechanics are quite competent nowadays. They have lots of experience with BBA and VW brands because those are so common in China.
